Dear Parents,

It has been another fantastically busy week at Crackley Hall, as always! 

This week has marked British Science Week, and the school has been a-buzz with Scientific activity. We were delighted to welcome Princethorpe College’s Head of Physics, Mr Lee, and students Megan, Giorgio, Tom and Jack to our assembly on Monday morning – they really put on a thrilling show! Our pupils were wowed and it was wonderful to have Megan and Giorgio back at Crackley Hall.

Our annual Skipathon took place on Tuesday and we are delighted to have already counted over £1,000 in donations for the Air Ambulance! Thank you all for your support of this fantastic cause, and please do remember to send in any outstanding sponsorship money so that we can have this money sent off to the charity.

I was very sorry not to be able to accompany our First Reconciliation pupils when they received the sacrament on Tuesday afternoon. They were in my prayers at this very important time in their journey of faith. Thank you to Fr Kevin, Mrs Forino and Mrs Simmonds for everything that they continue to do for our pupils.

Our Easter performance yesterday evening was beautifully delivered and I would like to thank the whole performing arts team for their work with the children. We are always grateful to be able to pause and reflect on this important time of year in the Christian calendar, and the children delivered the story with dignity, care and respect. They were absolutely fantastic!

We remember, in our thoughts and prayers at this time, all of our families who begun the period of Ramadan on Monday this week.

We are looking forward to our playground being refurbished during the Easter holidays. We are so grateful to the PTA for their sizeable donation to support the overall cost of this. Please do continue to support our PTA in their fundraising - the 200 Club is a fantastic way to do this, and you may win funds in the process! Details can be found via the link in the menu to the left of this screen. 

The Junior 6 children will be leaving on Sunday morning, in the early hours, and I am very much looking forward to accompanying them on this outing. Thank you very much to Mrs Vaughan, Mrs Paphitis, Mrs Westerman, Mr Pike and particularly Mrs Horan, the trip leader, who will be accompanying the pupils. Please do keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Our U11A netball team did extremely well to win the ISA Midlands netball competition and then to follow this up with a bronze medal in the plate competition in the national finals. Well done to the team and to their coaches Mrs Vaughan and Miss Farquharson.

Congratulations to all of our cross-country runners who did so week this week. Some reports were delivered at today’s assembly but there will be further reports next week.

We were treated to two excellent musical performances at this morning’s assembly. Savannah played the Pink Panther on cello extremely well and Rory, singing Chim Chiminy was also exceptional. Very well done to both of them. Congratulations to pupils who achieved their Crackley Compass stars and to the many pupils who were awarded Da Vincis at assembly. Congratulations to our stars of the week: Nursery – Henry and Avro; Reception – Giulio and Seva; J1 – Jamie and Jacob; J2 – Delilah and Katie; J3 – Lilyrose and Liana; J4 – Harry and Zach; J5 – Felix and Malachi; and J5 – Harry B and Issy.

I hope that our sport supporters will be able to enjoy a super weekend, with some close competition expected in the final round of matches in the Six Nations Rugby Championship.

Crackley’s Junior 3 and Junior 4 pupils took to the stage yesterday evening to perform Easter Children, a simple but dramatic mini-musical, portraying the intrigue and mixed emotions of the Easter story.

It was lovely to see the children bringing the story to life, with Junior 4 performing on stage and Junior 3 the supporting chorus. From Palm Sunday, through the Last Supper and the betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane, to the trial and crucifixion and finally the resurrection, pupils carried the narrative with emotion and passion.

Congratulations to all the pupils on their brilliant performances and thank you to the staff for all their hard work putting the show together.

Assembly went with a whoosh on Monday morning when we were joined by four Princethorpe Sixth Formers to kick start our learning for British Science Week. The College’s STEAM Ambassadors introduced this year’s theme of ‘Time’, conducting exciting live experiments that amazed and impressed all.

The Princethorpe Sixth Formers then ran practical Physics and Biology workshops for Junior 5 and Junior 4 who enjoyed making and timing pendulums and exploring the spread of infectious diseases.

It was wonderful to see everyone's enthusiasm for science and to see them all getting involved.

Huge thanks to the College's Head of Physics, Dan Lee, and to Megan, Giorgio, Tom and Jack for providing such a boost to our BSW learning – they really put on a thrilling show!

As Princethorpe looks forward to welcoming its new pupils to the College in September, the Admissions Team has now turned its attention to entry for 2025.

Entrance Examinations, for entry to the school in September 2024, will take place on Saturday 9 November 2024 and we are already busy accepting registrations.

For 2025 entry there are a range of scholarships available for particularly able or talented candidates, from Academic, Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre including Dance) to Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster. Means-tested Bursaries are also available, along with The Thomas More Scholarship a means-tested scholarship for Catholic children, who attend a Catholic state primary school.

There are plenty of opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to visit the College before the Entrance Exams take place; including the Year 5 Taster Day for Crackley pupils on Tuesday 30 April, our Open Morning in April, Summer Open Evening in June and Open Afternoon in September.

Following the Entrance Exams, offer letters will be sent out on Thursday 28 November 2024 and the acceptance deadlines will be Monday 9 December 2024 for Years 8, 9 and 10 and Tuesday 4 March 2025 for Year 7. The acceptance deadline for Year 7 places is, by a nationally agreed code of practice, the same for all independent schools, allowing parents and children time to review all their options, including those from the maintained sector, before making a final decision.

On Tuesday 12 March, Crackley Hall’s pupils took it in turn to hop, skip or jump in Crackley Hall's Mini Vinnies Grand Charity Skipathon, an annual fund-raising event organised by our school Minnie Vinnies club. 

Mini Vinnies' Co-ordinator, Mrs Dolores Simmonds explains, “This year the children are skipping to support the Air Ambulance, a national charity that supports the lifesaving work of the UK's air ambulance charities."

The children at Crackley Hall pledged to raise as much money as possible for the charity and have been collecting sponsors over the last few weeks.  In the skipathon they took turns, to skip, hop or jump for one minute each. Supervised by Mrs Simmonds, wave after wave of eager skippers bounced and jumped their hearts out under the canopy in The Gables.

Well done to all the skippers who took part and a big thank you to those who have generously donated to the skipathon. Pledges are still coming in and we'll keep you updated as to the final amount raised. Please do send in any outstanding sponsorship money as soon as possible.

Chaplaincy Assistant, Dolores Simmonds, had an important milestone last weekend when she celebrated her 80th birthday on Mothering Sunday with her family and friends.

On behalf of the staff here at Crackley Hall, Headmaster, Rob Duigan, presented Dolores with a stunning 'Fantastic at 80' special pink rose. Said a delighted Dolores, on her secret to an enjoyable life, "My philosophy is to be reasonable and to look for the good points in everyone rather than focusing on their bad points. The three things in life which are important to me are God, family and friends."

Six pupils went to St Austin's Church in Kenilworth on Tuesday for their Sacrament of First Reconciliation. Led by Father Kevin, it was important preparation for their First Holy Communion later this year.  The Sacrament offers forgiveness for the times we have sinned and turned away from God. Sloane, William, Lewis, Liana, Eduardo and Vaughan each read a reading and during the homily Fr Kevin talked about how important forgiveness is in our lives. After each pupil made their Reconciliation, they lit a candle and said their prayers.  Fr Kevin then gave each pupil a crucifix as a reminder of their special day.

Huge thanks go to the School Council and their parents for their involvement in the Save the Children Kenilworth Spring Fayre that took place on Saturday 9 March at St Francis of Assisi Parish Centre.

The pupils had pre-potted plants in school with a volunteer from Save the Children. They ran their own ‘Spring in a Mug’ stall at the fayre raising £108.65. Everyone said what a credit they were to Crackley Hall School. They contributed, in a large part, to the lovely atmosphere, receiving many compliments from the organisers and visitors.

Altogether the Spring Fayre raised £1317.76 for Save the Children.

Crackley Hall pupils visited fellow Foundation Prep school Crescent School on Tuesday 12 March, to take part in an orchestral workshop. Designed to develop and stretch music and performance skills, pupils worked under the guidance of Crescent’s Director of Music, Julie Barnes, to prepare and rehearse a mixture of pieces ready for an afternoon performance.

The children relished making music, especially in such a big group. They worked hard to prepare three challenging pieces, including Yesterday by The Beatles, Chariots Of Fire by Vangelis and In The Mood by Glenn Miller, all three pieces testing the players’ technical and music-reading ability.

The day finished with a short concert for parents where four soloists also showcased their musical skills. For Crackley Hall, Angelica, from Junior 4, played the theme from The Pink Panther on cello while Elsie, from Junior 6, played Knock On Wood on the drums.

The workshop was a great opportunity for them all to play together, thank you Crescent School for an excellent day.

Crackley Hall School has thoroughly enjoyed celebrating British Science Week and exploring this year’s theme ‘Time’. In their Science lessons pupils have taken part in experiments and investigations designed to engage and inspire the next generation of young scientists. Even our very youngest have got involved.

The Hungry Caterpillar story gave Reception a lovely foundation to Science week as they discussed the change from caterpillar to butterfly. While Junior 1 decided to see how long it took for seeds to grow. They planted cress seeds and sunflower seeds. After just one week there were already signs of life and the children can’t wait to see who’s sunflower grows the tallest.

Junior 2 enjoyed exploring nature outside in Forest School, they made nests as part of their work for BSW. Junior 3 became geologists and palaeontologists as they discovered how amazing fossils of ancient creatures developed over millions of years. They even made their our own ‘foldable fossils’ to show the different stages in the process of fossilisation.

Junior 4 and Junior 5 took part in BSW workshops led by Princethorpe Sixth Formers. They investigated pendulums as they were introduced to the relationship between length and time. They built their own pendulums and tested them, and discovered that the pendulum length affects the time for one swing. They also studied infectious diseases and how disease can be transmitted between people and learned valuable lessons on the importance of washing your hands!

Science Lead, Julia Roberts, said, “British Science Week is always lots of fun here at Crackley Hall and this year’s topic of 'Time' has really inspired us all. Pupils have enjoyed a wide range of fascinating and fun experiments running alongside their normal day-to-day lessons.”

Junior 4 pupils Alfie and William were both at Twickenham Stadium last Saturday when England clinched victory with a last minute drop goal during a nailbiting Six Nations International Rugby Union match.  Alfie was lucky enough to meet Rory Best OBE, the Irish former rugby union player, who was the captain of the Ireland national team from 2016 to 2019.  He also met singer songwriter Rag 'n' Bone man, who performed at half-time and he managed to get a signed rugby top from Mike Catt, assistant coach for the Ireland national rugby team. Said an overjoyed Alfie, "We were sitting under the Royal Box and on top of the tunnel and at the beginning I went down to the barrier to get some signatures before the match started. It was awesome to see Rag 'n' Bone man!"

Alfie was so happy he couldn't wait to share photos with his class!

Tuesday 19 March - 2.00pm to 3.00pm

To mark St Joseph's Day on Tuesday 19 March, Crackley Hall School is holding a St Joseph’s Day Mass.

We cordially invite all former St Joseph's and Crackley Hall pupils and former staff to join us. The Mass will take place from 2.00pm to 3.00pm and afterwards there will be light refreshments for visitors and an opportunity to tour the school.

Tuesday 30 April 

As part of the preparation for secondary school transition we will be taking the Junior 5 classes to our Foundation senior school, Princethorpe College, on Tuesday 30 April for a Taster Day. They will be leaving Crackley Hall at 9.00am, by minibus.

Pupils will get a feel for senior school life through a variety of classroom sessions, they will also tour the school, have the chance to quiz current pupils in a Q&A session and experience breaktime and lunch in a busy secondary school environment. Please send your child in full school uniform but please note that no bags, snack, water bottle or lunch are needed as these will all be provided.

At the end of the afternoon, parents who are interested in entry to Princethorpe in September 2025 are invited to an informal Parents’ Information Session at 4.15pm, where they will collect their child.

Grove du Toit, the Headmaster, along with other key members of staff will be available to talk to you about the College and will outline the admissions process. The children will also be able to trial the online CEM test, one of the exams that prospective pupils complete during the Entrance Examinations Day, which will take place on Saturday 9 November 2024. Light refreshments will be served. 

For those parents who are unable to attend the Parents’ Information Session, your child will be transported back to Crackley Hall for 3.30pm. Children whose parents are collecting them from Princethorpe will have an extra lesson before their parents arrive.

Sunday 5 May - 9.30am

The Kenilworth Runners School Cross Country Challenge is returning this year and will be held in Abbey Fields on Sunday 5 May at 9.30am. Pupils in Junior 5 and Year 6 can enter, there are individual prizes for the first three boys and girls and a team prize for the overall highest scoring school (the first six runners from each school count towards team results).

More information will follow nearer the time so, for now, please save the date in your diaries.

We love to celebrate our pupils' talents, so every week in Celebration Assembly we hear of the childrens' successes and achievements and we watch performances by some of our pupils. Here are some photos from this morning.

A huge well done to all!

This week in DT, Junior 6 have collaborated in groups to design and make their own rainmakers. They started their project by researching the history of rainmakers, thinking about where they originated from and what they were used for. Then in their groups, the children planned out their own design and went away to source the materials they would need. What the children made in such a short time really impressed us - we were particularly amazed by their ability to work well with others and then evaluate their work afterwards. You showed great enthusiasm and diligence throughout the task Junior 6 - keep up the great work!

This week, Junior 5 took themselves back to the early 17th Century and re-dramatised the tale of Prospero and his daughter, Miranda; two characters brought to life by William Shakespeare. All of the children were superb in acting out key scenes, with many enthusiastically getting into the role of their character. The children also recognised the similarity in the setting of the play (a remote island) with their core text in English, Kensuke’s Kingdom. It was lovely to see the children demonstrate such a wonderful attitude towards the performing arts, and to practise such important life skills, such as speaking with clarity and using facial expression to reflect inner feeling. They were all superstars!

As part of British Science Week in Junior 4R we looked at Pendulum (Physics): pupils were introduced to the relationship between length and time period of a pendulum, they then built their own pendulum and tested it to investigate how length affects time for one swing. They were then challenged to make a one second pendulum by using their data to predict the length needed to give an exact time of one second for one swing.

In Junior 4A, we studied infectious diseases (Biology): pupils were introduced to how disease can be transmitted between people and took part in two simulations, one to show how disease can be spread through contact (they shook hands or high-fived each other and the ‘disease’ was tracked using an invisible gel that fluoresces under UV light); the second to show how rapid transmission can be spread via fluids using beakers of water, where one carrier of the disease resulted in the majority of pupils infected after the water was shared with several others (one beaker contained invisible starch which spread quickly to multiple beakers, the beakers were tested at the end with iodine which is orange but turns dark blue/black in the presence of starch). 

Well done, Junior 4.  What an incredible time we all had.

Junior 3 have been really looking forward to performing the Easter show this week and have been ardously rehearsing. Mrs Olden has reported that they have sung beautifully and have eagerly leant new songs in readiness for the performance. Despite all the stopping and starting in rehearsals, Junior 3 have acted with maturity and watched the Junior 4s performances carefully so they know when they need to join in. The children will certainly be ready for taking on the mantle of more prominent roles when they are in Junior 4 next year. Well done, Junior 3!

Junior 2 embarked on an enriching educational visit to St John's Museum in Warwick, immersing themselves in the captivating narratives of the past. Excitement buzzed through the air, as they boarded the coach and made our way to the museum. The grand halls were filled with beautiful artifacts whispering tales of years gone by. Junior 2 were very engaged during the tour leader’s discussion, where the children asked pertinent questions relating to the fire that took place in Warwick. They even acted out parts of local people who made claims for compensation. Lunch was a perfect picnic where they were able to discuss their day and enjoy each others company in a stimulating environment. As they departed the museum, their minds were full of new found information. What a great day they all had!

Have you ever eaten potato and leek soup? If you have, you have had a taste of Wales, which is the country we were looking at in Geography this week. We also tried Welsh cakes which received a mixed reaction! Knowing the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees was the focus in Science, along with discovering how an apple tree changes throughout the four seasons of a year. In English we finished looking at Where The Wild Things Are by re-telling the story using pieces of our story map to help write it in the correct order. Capacity was the topic in Maths, and we used sand to help measure out the capacity of different containers and compare which ones held more or less than each other.

What a busy week we’ve had in Reception.  Our story, The Hungry Caterpillar gave us a lovely foundation to Science week as we discussed the changes from caterpillar to butterfly.  The children have been using their clever observing eyes – noticing symmetrical patterns, drawing butterflies and have used the story to support some excellent writing. We recalled what the caterpillar ate each day and used our phonic knowledge to write about the different foods he ate. We have also used our bodies to help our maths this week – our noses helped us as the numbers on our fingers got bigger, and our eyes did the work when it came to subitising. This week we worked hard at conceptual subitising: spotting small groups of numbers within a bigger collection of objects: for example, when looking at 10 coins, we noticed a set of 4, another set of 4, and then two more. This helped us to work out the bigger number quickly by combining them together.

This week the children have been focused upon ‘Marvellous Minibeasts’.

In Dormice, we have loved listening to the story of Superworm, and trying to catch his minibeast friends. We have been ‘bug’ hunting for real life Superworms and made a ‘delicious’ home for Superworm using a variety of resources and our senses to describe diffferent materials.

In Badgers and Hedgehogs, we held the 'Grand Snail Race', with eight, banded garden snails sporting different coloured spots on their shells. The children cheered for their favourite snails as they sped towards the geranium leaves at the edge of the tray. This provided an ideal, real-life opportunity to apply ordinal maths vocabulary as we discussed who came first, second and third.

As the week went on, the children became increasingly confident about holding a snail so that they could make a really close observation of our visiting gastropods.

Our Minibeast topic also lent itself to exploring repeated pattern in Shape and Space, as the children created sequences using photos of bugs.

On the craft table, children had an opportunity to copy a spiral snail collage using mosaic tiles, inspired by the Artist Matisse.

Outside, the wet Spring weather was perfect for a bug hunt and our eagle-eyed youngsters discovered lots of tiny white slug eggs and wriggly worms.

Junior 2 had a slow reveal of 'The Last Supper' painting by Leonardo da Vinci in RE this week. The pupils were very perceptive and noticed how each of the disciples had their own unique expressions displaying their emotions. Pupils observed how bright the sunrise was coming through the windows and they were very quick to recognise a numerical reference to the number 3; in that there were three windows, three pictures on each side of the walls, and groups of three disciples gathered together, and concluded that this depicted the Holy Trinity. One pupil noticed how Thomas had his index finger pointing and said this could mean that Jesus had only one day left, or that Jesus would rise up to heaven. Some noticed the spilt salt next to Judas' elbow.  We also sequenced the events of Palm Sunday together and discussed each part of the story. Well done, Junior 2!

The U11 Netball team competed in the ISA Netball Nationals on Wednesday 13 March at Kings High School. The girls had qualified for the finals only the week before in a dominant outing at the Midlands Regional Final. It was a fantastic experience for the girls to play in this prestigious national event where they faced the very best teams from across the country.

Team Crackley started the tournament well, with a 5-2 win over Gatehouse School. Next, they played Scarisbrick Hall School and saw them off 4-3. Another close game over Copthill School delivered a 6-5 win. West Lodge Prep School was a tight game but the team earned themselves a 4-4 draw. Crosfields School proved a harder challenge and despite playing well the girls lost narrowly 5-7. In their final group match Crackley faced an exceptionally strong school, Trinity School Teignmouth, who played some amazing netball, the match finished in a 14-1 loss.

That meant that Crackley Hall finished second in the Group and qualified for the afternoon’s Plate competition. In the Plate semi-final the team faced Littlegarth School, the girls showed tenacity and battled hard but eventually went down 6-11.

Crackley’s girls showed real resilience following the defeat, picking themselves up and playing really well in the Plate third place play off against Sherborne House School where in a nail-biting game the girls stayed strong throughout to eventually claim victory 5-4 and earn themselves a Bronze medal.

All in all, it was a great day of netball. A huge well done to them all.

Playing for Crackley Hall School in the U11 National Netball Squad were: Elsie (Captain), Alexa, Amy, Issy, Elora, Darcey and Phoebe.

Crackley Hall sent cross country teams to Twycross House’s U11 and U9 cross country events this week. Running against teams from across the Midlands, there was lots of grit and determination on show.

The U11s ran on Monday with the girls and boys competing separately. Results were:
U11 Girls: Eloise S 5th, Elora H 14th, Lexi E 17th, Jessie J 18th, Evie K 23rd.
U11 Boys: Leo C 7th, Fergus C 20th, Harry B 27th, Josh B 31st, Alfred C 32nd.

The U9s then had their turn on Tuesday. Their results were:
U9 Girls: Isabel A-J 2nd, Charley C (J3/U8) 11th, Laura R (J3/U8) 16th, Gabriella F 19th.
U9 Boys: Harry W 7th, Hector G-C 9th, Casper B 12th, Archie J 20th, Hugo R 21st.

Junior 5 & 6 Hockey Club - This club will now be held at school on the Astro. Collection will be at 5pm from the Lower Playground.

Thursday 21 March

Junior 4 Rugby Club - Due to the PGL Junior 4 Parents Meeting, collection will be from school after the meeting ends.

Friday 22 March

Junior 5 & 6 Country Club - This club has been CANCELLLED.

Lego and science! What a great combination. Inspired by British Science Week celebrating science, technology, engineering and maths, in Lego Club this week we got competitive…very competitive. Our task was to build the strongest bridge. We considered air dynamics and lots of other things, but the real question we asked ourselves was how much load can a bridge take before breaking? We then extended the task to rebuild the same bridge, but with 20% few pieces and we kept trying and trying until we had the least possible number of pieces left. Great minds, great learning..and great fun!

200 Club

It's back and better than ever! Thank you to all who have supported us and signed up to the new format 200 Club. We have half-termly draws and the end of year £200 super draw so please sign yourself up to raise funds directly for the playground climbing wall. PTA Pre-loved Uniform

Many thanks for all the donations that have been sent in this year - without these we literally could not operate!

Please continue to use the containers in the foyer to drop off any donations rather than dropping into the office staff. We are especially grateful to receive good quality sports items - particularly tracksuit bottoms!

For example we funded the Rise Theatre day for the whole school, just one of the termly events we facilitate to give every pupil an extraordinary, enhanced experience. There are many ways to help us keep up the good work!

Due to club and activity changes, permanent Aftercare bookings are only valid for the current term. 

If you require either permanent or occasional Aftercare for the Lent Term, please make a new booking by emailing:

aftercare@crackleyhall.co.uk or receptionist@crackleyhall.co.uk

If you need to make a same-day Aftercare booking - please ensure you contact the school office no later than 1:00 pm that day. Any requests made after 1:00 pm will only be authorised at the Headmaster's discretion.

If you have booked an Aftercare session, letting your child know would also be helpful.

Any children not collected from the carline, for example, if parents are stuck in traffic, will be taken to Aftercare at 4:15 pm, when carline finishes and charged accordingly.

Aftercare runs from 3:15 pm until 6:00 pm, with charges being £5.00 per hour or part thereof.

Childcare vouchers can be used as payment or part payment for Aftercare.
