Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

As we draw to the end of this school week, I have had a brief opportunity to reflect on the events that have taken place over the last 5 days and this week has been an exceptionally busy one for all staff at Crackley Hall.

On Monday children helped load almost 100 shoe boxes that have been packed with useful items, gifts and love which will be distributed to those children who are less fortunate.    The Samaritan’s Purse Charity will be delivering the shoe boxes to the children over the next few weeks and are always very grateful for the donations received.  Thank you very much, everyone!

I was able to accompany our Junior 6 classes to Costa on Monday which was very enjoyable.  This week was the last week of J6’s activity fortnight where they have been able to relax a little after the entrance examinations and experience some fun time together as a class, in between some formal lessons.  I understand that the movie day was a big hit with all involved and although all the children have appreciated the time off timetable, usual lessons will resume, full-time, on Monday.

On Wednesday I welcomed Inspectors from the Archdiocese of Birmingham into school and they met with staff and children during the day.  The children’s behaviour and interaction with the inspectors was exemplary and I am incredibly proud of them all.  All staff at Crackley Hall were involved in preparing for the visit but I would like to thank Mrs Jackson-Mayne, as Head of Religious Education, in particular for her attention to detail and sharing her knowledge of the subject.  I will be able to provide more details of the outcome of the inspection in due course.   Initial feedback was very positive indeed and our pupils were a credit to the school and to their families.  As mentioned, thank you very much to Mrs Jackson-Mayne for all her tremendous work and to all the staff, especially Mrs Simmonds and the RE teachers, for their hard work and assistance over the past term.

Wednesday also saw our Nursery children getting creative with pottery and this was a very successful event which will, no doubt, be repeated again in the not too distant future.  I was pleased to be able to see some of our J6 parents on Wednesday afternoon at the French visit meeting and I hope that as many children as possible are able to attend this wonderful residential opportunity next Summer.  There will be a meeting for parents next Wednesday for our other residential visit to Alton Castle for J5 children which I hope parents will attend.

Although yesterday evening was a late finish for some of our staff it was an opportunity to showcaseour Nursery and Reception provision and this event was particularly well attended.  My thanks to Mrs Jenny Vaughan, Mrs Butler, Mrs Bird, Mrs O’Carroll-Bailey, Mrs Glen-Roots and Mrs Whitehurst for their efforts to make the event such a success.

Well done to all children who participated in the LAMDA examinations this week.  I know that some children were particularly nervous but I am sure that the experience will help them develop and gain confidence for future examinations.  Thank you to Mrs Wildey and Mrs Paphitis (Miss Rod) for the work they are doing with our drama pupils.

Our sports teams performed well this week, with excellent rugby results against Ratcliffe and the ISA Girls playing their best at the National Hockey Tournament in London on Thursday.  Congratulations to our coaches and the teams.

Congratulations to our stars of the week: Georgie, Amelia, Issy, Isla, Jia, Evie, Rhomun, Elle, Solon, Amelia, Fintan, Zach, Sam, Seamus and Olivia – you have all worked so hard and are setting a good example to all your friends – keep it up!

Thank you to Kiran, Evie, Isabella and the Junior 4 recorder group for your wonderful performances this morning.  It is always a delight hearing and seeing our pupils sing and play music – they are all certainly very talented.

Next week will see preparations increase in pace, ready for the Christmas Fayre and I know that the PTA will appreciate your help with donations to the various collections.  May I remind you that there is a non-uniform day on Friday 30 and, in return, children should bring in their donations to the fayre.  If your child is attending the Kenilworth Light Switch On during the evening of Friday 30, please ensure they arrive at Loch Fyne restaurant in full school uniform and I will look forward to watching them perform.

Please do try your hardest to attend the online safety workshop for parents, being held at school at 19:00 on Monday evening.  Mr Cottrill will be hosting our presenter, Paul Hay, as I will be at trustees’ meeting at Princethorpe.  The pupils and staff will have taken part in the training and lessons through the day.

The England cricketers have got off to a good start in their third test against Sri Lanka – let’s hope that they can keep it up to win the test series 3-0.   After a great result against Croatia (notoriously difficult opponents) in the Nations League, the England football team can now look forward to a place in the finals in summer 2019.  A fantastic effort by Gareth Southgate and his young team – nothing like team spirit and togetherness to change a team’s fortunes!  This weekend sees the final round of the rugby autumn internationals with England up against Australia, Wales against South Africa, Ireland versus USA and Scotland playing Argentina (which should be a good game).  France will be hosting Fiji but Italy will have a tough afternoon against New Zealand.  I think that the England v Australia match will be good viewing but feel Wales will continue their dominance over the Springboks.

Finally, and appealing to you again, our annual Christmas Fayre is one of the highlights of the school year and I hope that as many pupils, family members and staff as possible will be out to support our hardworking (and largely new) PTA committee next Saturday afternoon.  It really is a great day for the children and they usually have a tremendous amount of fun whilst getting in the mood for Christmas.  The night prior to the Fayre, next Friday evening, sees our Choir singing at the switching on of the High Street lights – a great honour and a lot of fun.  Everyone is welcome to attend and support them.  The Kenilworth High Street is a spectacle of Christmas stalls, pork batch (and other food) stands and a festive family atmosphere for everyone.

I hope you enjoy reading the rest of this week’s Chronicle and I would like to draw your attention to forthcoming events so that you do not miss any notices that may affect your child.

I wish you all a restful and happy (and warmer) weekend with your families.

God bless,

Robert Duigan

Crackley Hockey Girls A Credit To Their School

It was a cold and early start for the girls off to the ISA National Hockey Tournament on Thursday 22 November.  After scraping the first ice of the year off cars, they arrived at school at 6am dressed warmly in onesies and ready for the long journey to the Olympic Park.  They enjoyed a brief stop off for a much needed breakfast, before finally arriving at the Lee Valley Stadium where they got changed and ready to face the famous blue ‘smurf turf’ that is national home ground for the English and British hockey squads.

16 schools from all around the country were competing, so the girls knew that they had a tough schedule ahead.  Split into four pools of four teams they played a round robin tournament within the pool. The top teams from each pool then moved through to the Cup play offs, while the bottom teams played for the Plate.

The squad of Hannah Wildey (Captain), Amisha Modi, Caitlin Horan, Annamaria Kordas, Carys Warrener-Gray, Francesca Kelly, Martha Summers and Annabel Leigh started strong and kept a clean sheet throughout the pool. With a win and two draws, they finished top of their group table and went through to take part in the Cup play offs.

In the Cup, they faced Lingfield College first. The girls played well and managed to maintain possession for most of the game but, unfortunately, the opposition had a lucky break and scored. Crackley’s girls held their heads up high and moved on to their next match.  Next, they played Littlegarth School, who outclassed every other team there. Their clinical finishing had ensured an average of 5 goals per game. Crackley’s girls were determined to keep a clean sheet and worked hard to close their opponents down.  In the end only 3 goals got past the post.  An unfortunate glitch in the organisation left the girls with a five match wait till their final game. With the temperatures dropping and tiredness setting in, it was a more subdued team that faced Malvern St James. The girls worked hard and a closely contested game ended in a 1-0 loss for Crackley.  So the team finished in overall 7th place.  In a national competition that is an awesome achievement!

The girls take away some fantastic memories after playing at such a prestigious venue. Personalised hoodies and a tea stop at MacDonalds on the way home were added extra highlights that completed a fantastic day!

Mrs Vaughan and Mrs Horan were both extremely proud of the girls.  Their behaviour, manners and conduct were second to none and they were a credit to both their school and their parents!

Author Alina Crisan Presents Professor Broccoli

On Tuesday Alina Crisan came into school to visit Reception, Junior 1 and Junior 2. She brought with her an amazing book that she had written. It was all about Professor Broccoli and his journey through the alphabet. Each page had alliterative rhymes and funny sentences all to do with a particular letter of the alphabet. The children thoroughly enjoyed her reading the story to them and gave thoughtful answers to the questions she asked relating to the book.

At the end everyone was allowed a cuddle from Professor Broccoli and if they bought one of her books they also got a furry Professor Broccoli bookmark that was too tempting to resist!

Junior 6 Savour Post Exam Activities

After their recent endeavours tackling senior school entrance exams, Junior 6 deserved some well earned rest and recuperation.

Desks were cleared of pencil pots, exercise books and revision notes, and normal lessons exchanged for board games, sports activites and forest school.

Last week there was a 'Bake  Off' style cake decorating competition - with all manner of shapes, swirls, hundreds and thousands and silver balls.

This week started with the eager group walking down to Costa Coffee in Kenilworth, where they enjoyed treats such as hot chocolate and brownies. And ended with a 'Movies and Munchies' day.

A great time was had by all. Well done Junior 6, you've earned it!

It is that time of year again when the Scholastic Book Fair comes to Crackley Hall.

The book fair will arrive in school on Monday 26 November and stay until the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 1 December. Although children may purchase books at certain times during the school day, you are invited to accompany your child any day that week after school between 3.30pm and 4.30pm where you will be able to purchase books and other stationery items.

Funds raised at this event enable the school to order books that can be used from Nursery to J6 and it is hoped that this year will break all previous records. As an alternative to children bringing cash into school, parents are encouraged to purchase Scholastic Book Fair vouchers online using the following link:

https://shop.scholastic.co.uk

Any vouchers bought entitle the purchaser to 20% extra free.

All children will be taken back to their classroom at the end of the performance and we would ask that you please remain seated while the children file out of the hall.

Operation Christmas Child

Mrs Jackson-Mayne would like to thank you all for the huge effort with Operation Chistmas Child this year.

This year the school collected almost 100 boxes!

Any remaining boxes can be brought in by next Monday at the very latest, as Mrs Jackson-Mayne is volunteering at the warehouse this year and can take them with her.

Christmas Tree Decoration Competition

This year the theme for the Christmas Tree Decoration Competition at St Nicholas Church will be 'Protecting the Environment by Recycling'.

Students are therefore invited to design and make either a 2D or 3D decoration using only things that can be recycled.

All decorations should have a loop attached to them so that they can be hung easily on the Crackley Hall Christmas tree.

All decorations should be handed in to Mrs Jackson-Mayne by Wednesday 28 November as she will need time to decorate our tree and make it look lovely.

Also, don't forget to visit St Nicholas Church next Friday 30 November after the light switch on, or on Saturday afternoon to see our tree and all the other trees.

All proceeds from this years festival will be given to the Alzheimer's Society.

Nursery News

It was lovely to see some of you Thursday evening at our Open Evening for Reception. We are really excited about how many of you are choosing Crackley Hall School for your child’s educational journey, but wherever you decide to go, if you have any questions about the step into school, please ask. We will be working with everyone in the pre-school to make sure their transition is as smooth as possible, and that everyone is ready to leap into learning!

This week I have been knocked sideways by the enthusiasm for learning in the big room, and was especially pleased to see one group choosing to ‘play’ their own phonics session – taking turns to be me and directing their friends as they chose items from a bag and sorted the sounds! If you want to follow what we are doing at home you could play I-spy games, maybe focussing on the letters we have looked at so far, s, a and t. Next week we will be thinking about penguins, polar bears, piglets, parachutes and pie as we explore the letter sound p! Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to tell me if you think of any amazing p words.

Non Uniform Day -  Friday 30 November

There will be a non uniform day on Friday 30 November for all the children. In return we are asking for specific donations for the Christmas Fayre:

Little Crackers, Reception & J1 children: we kindly request that each child donates a box of chocolates for the hugely popular chocolate tombola stall.

J2, J3 & J4 children:  we ask each child to donate a glass jar filled with Christmas-related treats for the ‘Goodies in a Jar’ tombola stall. Suggested fillings include:  Christmas chocolates, stationery items, small toys, craft items, etc.  (unisex where possible please)

J5 & J6 children:  we would love every child to donate a bottle for the bottle tombola stall, such as a bottle of wine or spirits.

Donations can be left at either the main school entrance or the Gables entrance.

In addition we are also holding a teddy tombola, which is always a favourite with the children, so have a look and see if you have any unwanted teddies at home in good condition that you can donate. There is a box out in the main entrance for donations in the run up to the Fayre.

We are still short of a few helpers on the day too, so if you can spare a couple of hours to help on the day then please let a member of the PTA know or email mfox1401@gmail.com

We really do appreciate all your help and all of the money raised goes straight back into the PTA fund.

Calling All Bakers ( Nut Free ) And Homecraft Donations

We lost quite a few of our regular bakers this year when their children moved on to secondary school.  So we have rather a depleted list!

So if any of you fantastic bakers can manage to rustle up a whole cake/minces pies/something to sell on our Home Crafts Stall at the Christmas Fayre (Saturday 1 December) - we would really appreciate it  - as always.

Also if anybody is feeling particularly crafty and would like to donate any unwanted gifts or handmade gifts such as candle holders, photo frames, decorative jars or homemade jams, marmalades or chutney’s this would also be very much appreciated and something you could maybe involve your children in creating!

Please let Laura know what and how many you can make lauraeascroft@hotmail.com; boxes will be provided for cakes.

There will be a box out in the main entrance for donations in the run up to the Fayre

Please bring your donations into school on Wednesday 28 November

Christmas Cards Will Be Arriving Soon

Thank you to all of you who ordered your children’s homemade Christmas cards. They should be with you shortly.
