Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

I hope that the second week of the new school year has started to feel more familiar to you and the children. Class information evenings have taken place for all year groups, with our last one being this afternoon; I hope that you have found these useful. If you have any further questions concerning your child, please make contact with your child’s form teacher in the first instance who will be able to help or direct you to the most appropriate member of staff.

I was delighted to welcome many of our new parents to our Information Evening on Monday 12 September. This provided an opportunity to meet school staff and also other parents who are new to the Crackley Hall community. My thanks to Mrs Jenny Vaughan for co-ordinating this event and to Holroyd Howe staff for providing a splendid selection of canapes.

Junior 3 and 4 were able to return to swimming lessons this week at the Xcel Centre in Coventry. Whilst some of our Junior 3 children will not be able to participate every week this term, all children will be involved and I look forward to hearing about their progress and seeing the certificates achieved.

Following our very successful Compliance Inspection towards the end of last term, I am very proud to report that we received a glowing report from the Independent Schools inspectorate; meeting all the requirements from each section. Further details are reported later in this Chronicle but I am immensely grateful to every member of staff for their part played during the inspection, and every day since.

Last week, I announced our Junior 6 captains for this academic year; all Stewards will be celebrated next Friday’s assembly.  Each Junior 6 child was able to apply for a role and had an opportunity to speak to their peers as to why they would like to serve as a captain. These roles and responsibilities are an opportunity for the children to become role models for the younger students and I congratulate every new captain and steward.

During our Key Stage 1 celebration assembly today, I presented Stars of the Week to Harper, Faryal, Thomas, Wilf, William, Francesca, Thea, Henry, Alex, Jessie-Jean, Olivia, Kit and Leani.  Congratulations to everyone on a super start to this term. We were also treated to wonderful singing by Josie-Jean.

There was also a super selection of certificates presented including LAMDA and music achievements.  Jai and Sloane received DaVinci’s for attaining 100% in their LAMDA examinations. Please do make sure you forward any certificates or trophies achieved outside of school so that these maybe celebrated during our assemblies.

As most of our families will know, our hard working PTA organise many events throughout the school year and these can be enjoyed by children, families and staff.  Next week, they will hold the first family event of this school year which will take place on Friday 23 September in the school hall.  The PTA have circulated details of the Ceilidh dance and I hope to see many of you in school next Friday afternoon.  Parking for this event will be on the school field.

Your continued support with carline collection times, and parking on the school field as much as possible, is much appreciated. This is particularly important on a Friday morning when we hold Celebration Assembly and Friday afternoon when there are several extra-curricular clubs taking place.  The school field will continue to be made available for parking which will ease traffic congestion and allow safe collection from the school premises.

Next week school will close on Monday for Her Majesty's funeral and we will return to school on Tuesday 20 September. We continue to pray for the repose of her soul and give thanks for her life, so generously lived in the service of others. She will always be remembered as a kind, caring, wise and considerate queen. We pray for her family, at this time including her successor, King Charles III.

I am also sad to report the passing this week of a former Headteacher of St Joseph’s/Crackley Hall. Mrs Lesley Cox is known to many in the school community and we remember her in prayer and pray especially that she is resting peacefully with Our Lord.

I would like to wish everyone a most peaceful long weekend with your families.

God bless

Crackley Hall Remembers Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Following the sad news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it has been a week of mourning for us all. The news has affected both staff and pupils across the whole school community and we wanted to provide time and space for the children to reflect and respond to the events and to share their thoughts and feelings.

Across the school and nursery, children and staff have come together to complete activities to reflect on Her Majesty’s life and legacy and to give thanks for her devoted service to our nation. Some classes worked on creative art tasks, while others expressed their thoughts and feelings through the written word. Their work has included stunning silhouettes beautifully decorated with jewels, a Paddington cleverly made from stamps, silhouettes of the Queen produced using stamps and royal images, hand coloured crowns filled with prayers and personal thoughts, beautiful poignant poetry, a thank you Union Flag carefully created with tissue paper and even a delightful corgi montage.

This morning in assembly, Mr Duigan talked to the children about the Queen and her last journey back to London. He spoke simply but with emotion about how the nation was paying their respects to our late Queen. He shared the work the different classes had completed this week, so that the whole school could reflect on the tributes to Her Majesty. Please do look at the gallery to see their incredible work.

We have all been impressed with how the children have responded this week.

Full Marks For Crackley Hall In Independent Schools’ Compliance Inspection

Following their inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate's (ISI) Regulatory Compliance team Crackley Hall School is delighted to report that it has passed the Inspection with full marks, with the school meeting all the requirements in every section.

An ISI Compliance Inspection is a detailed review of the school to ensure that it meets the standards required in terms of a wide range of important factors, including:

  • Quality of education provided
  • Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils
  • Welfare, health and safety of pupils
  • Suitability of staff, supply staff, and proprietors
  • Premises and accommodation
  • The provision of information
  • Handling complaints
  • Quality of leadership of and management of the school

The inspectors observed lessons and pupils’ work. They spoke with pupils, teachers, senior staff and the Chair of Trustees. They observed extra-curricular activity, attended assemblies and inspected the premises. In addition, they reviewed the responses of parents and pupils to pre-inspection questionnaires.

Amongst other comments, in their report, the inspectors highlighted, “The teaching enables pupils to make good progress”, “Principles and values are actively promoted which facilitate the personal development of pupils”, and “Leaders and managers demonstrate good skills and knowledge”.

At the end of the thorough two-day inspection at the end of last term the inspectors concluded, “The school meets the standards and no further action is required as a result of this inspection.”

Headmaster, Rob Duigan, commented, "I was particularly pleased with the informal feedback I received from the inspectors who were clearly impressed with our school. It is no small achievement to have passed this inspection so comprehensively, and I am delighted with the result. My thanks go to the outstanding staff here at Crackley Hall; all of whom have played their part in this successful inspection."

A copy of the report is available to read in full here and will be on both the school and ISI’s websites shortly.

Learning In Action

Junior 6

It was fantastic to welcome our new Junior 6s into the classroom last week to begin our journey together! We got straight down to work having gone through our timetable and in English, thought about the different ways that we could begin our sentences so that they are as varied as possible. We wrote some super descriptions, making sure that our vocabulary choices were as precise as possible, and our words painted a very clear picture for our readers. In Maths, we looked at place value and considered what different digits represent in numbers, multiplying and dividing these, and rounding them. In RE we began our unit on The Story of the People of God and learnt more about the Bible and the books within it. All the children have made a wonderful start and are really looking forward to the year ahead!

This weel in Junior 6 we have been thinking about how to create specific atmospheres in our writing by the language we choose and the associations, sometimes subconsciously, that we make when we read and hear certain words. We began by reading an extract from The Hobbit and identified how J.R.R. Tolkein had chosen language and created a picture for us by selecting precise words from his palette. We looked at collages of pictures and photos and considered how these made us feel and why. We then transferred these ideas into our own word banks and drew upon these when writing our own descriptions. We are definitely learning to read like a writer and write like a reader!

Junior 5

It’s been an exciting two weeks in Junior 5. After catching up with friends, comparing new shoes and sharing our mixed feelings of apprehension and curiosity about the year ahead with each other, we soon happily settled back into school life, albeit with new classrooms and teachers! As part of our ‘Getting to Know One Another’ week, we have been working on a piece of art that shows our profile in silhouette, filled in with illustrations all about us. We have loved sharing and talking about our interests and favourite things and feel we all know each other a lot better now. What better way to start a brand new school year.

In J5L’s Science lessons, we have been learning the order of the planets and the distance they are from the sun. To make this a more fun activity, we took our planet signs and went outside so that we could space ourselves out in a scaled down version of the layout. Mercury, for example, is only 40cm away from the sun in our version, whereas Neptune is 30m away! During the holidays, some of us created some amazing posters about different planets. Mrs Lammas and Miss Broadbent were blown away with our projects!

Junior 4

All of Junior 4 have returned to school full of enthusiasm and they have all been so ready to learn! It’s also been fabulous to see how organised they have been with their school equipment. In Science we have been learning about Sounds, how we hear and learning all about the function of the ear. We have also been on a learning walk in and around school to observe the sounds that we have heard.

This week, Junior 4 continued their excellent start to the year, putting their all in to every lesson and continuing to arrive at school with an outstanding attitude. In English, they enjoyed listening to the first part of our class book Cloud Tea Monkeys and then enjoyed adding detail to their sentences by expanding the noun. We also went swimming as a year group and we all ventured into the water ready to learn and improve our strokes. As we approach Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, the children have been writing their own tributes in the form of poetry, which will be on display along with other year groups. We were also treated to a wonderful collective worship, expertly prepared and delivered by Daiya, Amelia and Harrison. Well done to everyone!

Junior 3

Junior 3H have had a fantastic start to the new year and have come back to school raring to go. As Ms Holmes and Mrs Paphitis said, “what a lovely bunch!”

They have been chatting about classroom matters, getting used to all the new displays and bookshelves and thinking about what we are going to be learning about this year. Their class book, The Twits got them off to a great start.

They have enjoyed getting to know each other and finding out all about the lessons and teachers who will be teaching them.

This week, Junior 3 settled into their learning and especially into their stone age topic. They made like cavemen and women and got properly grubby during our art lessons, as we used our hands to create some spectacular ‘cave’ paintings. They learned all about the tools stone age people would have used, how they would have made their ‘paints’ and also how they would have experimented with shape and pattern.

They have also been flexing their place value muscles in Maths, adeptly recognising the value of each digit and becoming flexible in partitioning numbers in different ways. The children loved using base 10 to show our understanding. These foundation skills are going to be the basis of a wonderful year of mathematics.

Junior 3H had a wonderful time creating tiny crowns for a prayer card for Her Majesty this week. We spent time looking at different royal crowns and what they meant. We talked about gemstones and their significance. Pupils then created their own royal ‘crown’ and we discussed and wrote down some of the things we had been thinking about since the passing of Queen Elizabeth.

Junior 2

Well done on your first two weeks in Junior 2 everybody, you have been super stars! You have been learning our new routines and expectations and we know we are going to have a fabulous year. We have started our ‘Castles’ topic and you amazed us with what you could remember about William the Conqueror, where he came from, how many years ago and why he introduced castles into Britain. In English we have started to delve into the beautiful book Inside the Villains and have been focusing on characters and even created our own. We have been getting our brains going again in Maths and it is so lovely to see how you all enjoy maths and are able to use reasoning to explain your answers; we do love maths here at Crackley. Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to doing it all again next week.

Junior 1

How lovely it was to welcome everyone back to school and see that our Junior 1 classes have grown by the addition of Matteo and Sherry. After settling into our new classes and catching up with each other, we have been rather busy. Our topic in Science is ‘Who am I?’, so we learnt about different body parts that we have and that inside our body is a skeleton. Using cotton buds and art straws, we cleverly made a picture of our skeletons and found out that where our arms and legs bend there are joints. Maths saw us revisit numbers to 10 and there was an opportunity to play interactive activities on the whiteboard to reinforce our learning. In Geography we were able to look at our country, town and school from space, using Google Earth. The best part was watching it zoom in from outside Earth to right above our school!

Our Junior 1 classes are loving the idea that they are no longer the youngest children in school! They also beginning to understand this brings new responsibility as they begin to set a good example to others. Everyone is continuing to settle well into their new routines and a more formal approach to some lessons. This week we have been consolidating our Reception phonics before learning new digraphs and common exception words. Our Maths has been focusing on counting forwards and backwards, as well as finding one more and one less. However, the highlight of our week has definitely been our Science lesson where we focussed on the sense of smell. The children took great delight in finding matching pots - which were covered to hide what was inside. This meant everyone had to use their sense of smell to find someone with the same! We then went on to smell lots of different things and record our likes and dislikes. Fun and learning combined.

Reception

The children had a wonderful first week in Reception! They have been such superstars, coming into school bravely and enjoying all of the activities in the classroom. They have also been to their first assembly and singing practice with Mrs Olden! We are so proud of the children and cannot wait to see them thrive this year!

In our second week Reception have continued getting to know each other and have each made a poster all about themselves and their family. They have enjoyed sharing their photos with each other and talking about their likes and dislikes. Reception have had their first Mandarin and French lessons this week and their first session at Forest School. It has been a week of firsts as they adapt to the busy day to day life at Crackley Hall.

Learning In RE

School Assembly

Mr Duigan welcomed the whole school community in Monday’s Assembly and talked about having firm foundations and choosing to follow Jesus to keep us strong together. He spoke about how there are many parts to our body, but only one body. Each part of our body is needed and is equally essential to the other. Every person is an important part of our school, and we all need each other to make our school the best place it can be. Just like a body needs all of its parts, the whole body of our school needs each one of us.

Whole School Mass

Thank you to everyone who brought in a decorated stone this week. The theme of the Mass, which was celebrated today by Father Kevin and led by Junior 6V, was ‘Building our lives on Firm Foundations’. We were able to thank God in Mass for the wonderful partnership between children, parents, staff and the local community who help to make our school such a special place to be.

Prayer Activity

Pupils in Junior 3 have been learning about the different types of prayer. They had fun  blowing ‘Bubble Prayers’ to help them understand that prayer is a conversation with God and can be said anywhere, at any time for anyone.

Pupil Led Collective Worship

We are please to announce that pupil led Collective Worship is back. Pupil led Collective Worship is an important part of school life. Not only does it give the pupils the opportunity to collaborate and work as a team and present to others, it is also a fantastic way for pupils to take ownership of developing the spiritual life of the school. Each week a team of children will meet with Mrs Jackson-Mayne and discuss and plan out the theme of the worship for the next week. Pupils from J4 – J6 will help to deliver and present important themes to their class and also to the younger children.

Congratulations to the teams who delivered Collective Worship to Junior 4 – 6 this week. Pupils and staff were impressed with the way they conveyed the message of Education and Growth, to link with Education Sunday which was celebrated at Mass on 11 September. Pupils used the parable ‘Gardener and the Vine’ and the scripture, ‘I am the Vine’ to show how we can, with God’s love, can grow to be more caring and loving.

Junior 3 Trip to St Francis

Please remember to fill in your consent form on Evolve to enable your child to attend St Francis Church to find out more about Baptism.

Vocational Wheel

During Vocations Week 31 October 2022 – 4 November,  I would like to invite parents into school to share with pupils what they do for a living and explain to the pupils the talents and gifts they use to fulfil their role. Parents will speak to  a number of small groups of children (about 5 or 6 pupils) for about ten minutes each.

It would be a fantastic opportunity to inspire the children, ignite a few ambitions and reinforce positive attitudes on how we use our God given talents in different ways.

Clubs

Lego Club

Welcome back Lego builders! Did you celebrate Lego’s 90th anniversary on 10 August?  For Lego’s birthday during the summer, they really got into the world of play, not just with Lego bricks, but any kind of play, from puddle jumping to ball kicking, in fact if you could play it, Lego were celebrating! And so are Lego Club this week. Just take a look at our photos to see what our creative minds have been building. We had a chat about our beautiful Queen Elizabeth and how she interacted in such a fun way with Paddington Bear earlier in the year and we reflected on how she inspired so many people.

We then discussed why we play? It is hard to find the time to just stop and play because play is the best, most fun way to bring us closer to our family and friends. Always has been. Always will be.  When children play, they learn. Simple. Play has the power to change lives. It’s the best way to help children reach their full potential and learn life-long skills. As we all agreed in Lego Club - playing with Lego is the best way to express creativity. So Lego Club - let’s continue to build!
