Dear parents

I am sure you will all agree that I need to start this week’s Chronicle by congratulating all the children who participated in our performing arts events this week. Parents, grandparents, fellow pupils and staff were treated to some wonderful music, poetry, acting and singing.  The performing arts evening and afternoon showcased many of the talents that the children have and standards they have reached.  Their abilities never cease to impress me.  I know from the many comments I overheard and reactions from the audience, that you also found it uplifting and emotional to see your children grow in confidence and stand on stage to perform to an audience.   The children have all worked exceptionally hard to prepare their acts but none of this would be possible without the planning, encouragement and attention to detail from Mrs Olden, Mrs Wildey, Mrs Paphitis and the peripatetic teachers who visit each week.  I would also like to thank Mrs Stephenson who attended both events and was able to capture some action shots of many of our pupils.  

This week we have focused on children’s mental health and it has been quite timely that the children have all been able to join in together and celebrate through music which often brings great joy and a welcome break from academic studies and stresses of growing up.  Mrs Burley and Mrs Jackson-Mayne led the activities during mental health week and our children have really taken on board how important it is to look after one's mental health.  Thankfully this is a subject that is talked about more widely now, even at a young age, which can only be a positive move.  It is also good to see children looking after each other and recognising when their friends might need extra support.  Whilst we have focused on mental health this week, it will not be forgotten for the rest of this academic year as measures are in place to make sure the pupil voices will be heard and staff identify when extra help might be needed.

I was delighted to receive copies of the Crackley Review from 2021/22 academic year.   These have now been sent to our families in school and leavers who are in secondary school; I'm sure their families will enjoy looking at the photographs and reflecting on the time they spent at Crackley Hall School.  It is also interesting to see how much some of the current children have grown since the photographs were taken.  My thanks to the teachers involved and to Mrs Butler, Miss Flowers and particularly Mrs Stephenson from Princethorpe College for bringing to life this wonderful keepsake copies of which will be kept in archive for future staff and pupils to view.  I feel it is a privilege to have a place in Crackley Hall history and be a part of so many children’s formative years.

On Wednesday this week Junior 4 were invited to attend Princethorpe College to watch a performance of The Addams Family.  The younger children find it very exciting and interesting to visit Princethorpe College and Wednesday was no exception as they were treated to an outstanding show and hospitality from the College.  I’d like to thank Mr McCollin for inviting our pupils and all Junior 4 staff for ensuring this visit was enjoyed by the children.

In assembly this morning I congratulated our Stars of the Week: Sebastian, Isla  Bevan, Jay, Elliott, Charley, Rory, Nieve, Jude, Gwen, Phoebe, Austin, Sofi and Kate; Jia was presented with her star of the week from last Friday.  We also had another lovely musical performance this week and it was the turn of our drum group of Elsie, Ivy, Alfie, George and Ryan, followed by the choral group. Two super performances were enjoyed by everyone. Congratulations to everybody today, it has been a super busy week. 

We will end this week’s school events with the annual Headmaster's Quiz and I'm delighted to welcome teams to the School Hall later this evening.  I look forward to meeting the teams this evening and I am thankful to the PTA for putting in so much work behind the scenes to ensure this quiz can take place.

Next week is the last full week before half term and I'm sure the children will have shown you their sponsorship forms for the Skipathon.  This is a charity fundraising event held each year in support of Mary’s Meal who provide essential food provision the children in Africa.  Mrs Simmonds, our Chaplaincy Assistant, coordinates this fundraiser and last year managed to raise £5,000.  This year it will be slightly different as we will divide the total amount raised and share it with the Red Cross who will be providing aid for following the recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey.  Whilst on the subject of charity and fund raising, I am pleased to confirm that a total of £269.19 was raised at last week’s NSPCC Number Day and this money is now on it’s way to the charity.  Thank you to everyone who donated. 

Mid-term reports will be issued within the next ten days and a letter has already been sent to all families inviting you to attend a parent evening appointment on either the 8 or 9 March. You will be able to book an appointment from Monday 13 February from 4.00pm; please access My School Portal to do so.  Further details about bookings are contained in the letter from Ms McAloon.

On Monday and Tuesday 13 and 14 February Crackley Hall’s pupils will once again take part in a charity skipathon, an annual fund-raising event organised by Crackley’s Mini Vinnies.

Mini Vinnies’ Co-ordinator, Mrs Dolores Simmonds explains, “This year the children will be skipping to support Mary's Meals. The charity provides daily meals in a place of learning addressing both the immediate needs of hungry children whilst encouraging them to go to school where they can gain an education that can help them out of poverty. This is only possible due to the generosity of fundraisers, volunteers and supporters from all over the world.”

The children at Crackley Hall have pledged to raise as much money as possible for Mary's Meals and have been collecting sponsors over the last few weeks. In the skipathon the children will take it in turns, one House at a time, to skip, hop or jump for one minute each. 

With the recent earthquake disaster happening in Turkey and Syria, Mary's Meals have confirmed they will also be providing much needed help.

Pupils are asked to bring their own skipping ropes, if possible.

We are having an increasing amount of lost property in school which is unnamed and, therefore, impossible to be returned to its rightful owner.

From next Friday, a table of lost property will be put in the Gables Foyer before Celebration Assembly. Lost property will be put out for two weeks, to cover KS1 and KS2 Assemblies, with any unclaimed uniform being then donated to the PTA for re-sale.

Unnamed, unclaimed water bottles, lunchboxes and snackboxes will be disposed of.

Please help us to return your child's property to them by labelling everything clearly.

Please check labels in your own child`s clothing to see if you are in possession of someone else's items.

Crackley Hall’s Key Stage 2 Evening of Performing Arts took place this week on Tuesday 7 February.  As always, it showcased the breadth and depth of pupils’ musical and dramatic talents with the audience treated to enthusiastic individual and group performances.

The Musical Theatre Group opened proceedings with a spectacular performance of What Is This Feeling and The Wizard Of Oz Medley. Then followed some 18 performances all sparkling with crisp clear deliveries, fine-tuned fingers and well-rehearsed polish. Too many to mention all individually, a wonderful testament to the wide range of the repertoire.

There were entertaining ensemble numbers from the guitar, violin, cello, drum and choral speaking groups and a delightful performance by Junior 3 recorders.

Throughout the concert, pupils recited LAMDA pieces, many causing a chuckle particularly Sukhmani’s Homework Oh Homework and Diya’s My Mother Does My Homework, that were both delivered with such expression.

Two amazing instrumental solos, Kate’s Vivaldi Concerto on violin and Isabella’s Trumpet Concerto were much enjoyed and applauded warmly.

The evening finished, as it had begun, with the stage packed with performers as the Chamber Choir and Choral Group delivered glorious performances of favourites such as Heal The World, Sing A Song Of Sixpence and The Rhythm Of Life.

Headmaster Mr Duigan expressed his delight announcing, ‘There is no better way to spend an evening than to come and watch Crackley’s children perform. They never cease to amaze me. Thank you to them all it has been a truly memorable occasion.”

Huge thanks also to all of the staff involved in preparing the children and supporting the production and to Mrs Olden, Mrs Wildey and Mrs Paphitis who have shown us yet again what talent, energy and zest for the performing arts there is at Crackley Hall.

Crackley Hall’s KS1 Performing Arts Afternoon took place on Wednesday 8 February. The concert featured music, poetry and song, and parents, family and friends gathered excitedly in the hall to enjoy the celebration of the talent of our younger pupils.

The Musical Theatre Group opened proceedings with a lovely, lively rendition of Thumbelina, before Music Captain, Isabella, showcased the standard of performance that our older children go on to achieve, delivering an accomplished performance of Whirlwind on her trumpet.

Then Junior 1 came on stage and sang The Wreck Of The Amphitrite enthusiastically, and stayed on stage to play a lively Sleepless Night on recorder.

Up next were the Brass Ensemble playing Hot Cross Buns, then the Violin Ensemble who cleverly fingered Kangaroo before Sloane spoke slowly and clearly as she carefully enunciated her poem Sound’s Good. 

Junior 1G then performed their poem My Teacher’s Going Crazy, followed by Junior 1H performing Red Riding Hood. Cleo delivered a super violin solo of Polly’s Polka and Ashley was just as good playing Old Macdonald on the flute. Jai was word perfect as he recited his poem Clouds.

Then it was the turn of Junior 2 who delivered a fantastic performance of Hats and stayed on stage to play the traditional rhyme London’s Burning on recorder, before finally bringing the afternoon to a close with a super rendition of their poem On Top Of Spaghetti.

Our enormous thanks and congratulations go to all our accomplished performers who took to the stage in front of their proud parents, and of course to their teachers who have worked so hard to help them achieve so much.

Crackley Hall brother and sister, Teo in Junior 3 and Sienna F in Junior 5, have been busy raising money for the DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal. After being inspired by watching an edition of BBC Newsround, where a news report focused on the earthquake and the work of the rescue teams, Sienna felt compelled to help as much as she could. As they were having some building work done at home, Sienna and Teo thought that if they had a clear out of their old toys, they could raise money for the Earthquake Appeal. Said Sienna, "I'm so glad we both did this, as it is our little way of helping such a big cause."  Selling books and toys online, they managed to raise £144.53.  

Amazing work Teo and Sienna, you have shown us all how we can make a difference in our world. 

This week it has been Children’s Mental Health week. This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Connect’. Let’s Connect is about making meaningful connections for all, during Children’s Mental Health Week and beyond. People thrive in communities, and this connection is vital for our wellbeing. When we have healthy connections – to family, friends and others – this can support our mental health and our sense of wellbeing. When our need for rewarding social connections is not met, we can sometimes feel isolated and lonely, which can have a negative impact on our mental health.

For Children’s Mental Health Week 2023, we’re encouraging pupils to connect with others in healthy, rewarding and meaningful ways. The children had a special assembly to start the week and then took part in some fun, engaging lessons with their teachers to think about their connections.

In Reception, the children read the story The Invisible String by Patrice Karst, they then talked about who they were connected to, family, friends and pets. They drew a picture of themselves in the middle of the paper surrounded with those they feel connected to. They also decorated a jigsaw piece with something they like, and we joined this together to show how we connect as a class.

Junior 1 all had to find someone in the class who likes dogs, enjoys reading, likes swimming, has a brother and likes drawing. This gave them the chance to talk to each other and find out a little more about others in the class. They all also loved the chance to show off their colouring skills by decorating the front of the sheet in a bright and colourful way, which helped to cheer us all up!

This term we have launched ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ as part of our focus in RSHE and PSHE on mental health. Pupils were invited to take part in a logo competition to design a logo for Wellbeing Wednesday and we are delighted to congratulate Junior 6 pupil, Lexi, whose design has been chosen as the winner.

Her snazzy logo will now be made into a keyring which will be given to everyone to remind us all about the five steps we can all take to improve our mental health – ‘Connect with friends’, ‘Be active’, ‘Be kind’, ‘Be grateful’ and ‘Eat healthily’.

The latest edition of the Crackley Review has just been published and was sent out to families this week.

Our yearbook records and reflects the last academic year giving a super insight into life in school and the wonderful learning that goes on day in day out here at Crackley Hall School and Little Crackers Nursery.

It makes a wonderful memento for children and parents, and we hope you have all enjoyed looking through the stories and photos.

Thank you to all who have contributed their time and talents to help us put together this Review and who do so much to make this school such a vibrant, supportive and engaging place of learning.

Former Crackley Hall pupil, Toby Lee has been in touch to share the exciting news that he has reached the final five nominees for the 'UK Young Blues Artist Of The Year' in the 2023 UK Blues Awards.

Toby attended Crackley Hall School from 2014 to 2016 and then Princethorpe College until 2017. Dubbed a future superstar of the blues by Joe Bonamassa, Toby boasts an impressive musical CV.

In 2016 he was cast as Zack Mooneyham in the West End production of School of Rock the Musical for which he subsequently won an Olivier Award for 'Outstanding Achievement in Music'.

He has appeared on many TV shows around the world including TFI Friday twice, Little Big Shots USA, Spain and the UK, Comic Relief, Michael McIntyre, The X Factor, Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Blue Peter and Tonight at the London Palladium where he performed with McFly.

Toby has shared the stage with a host of stars including Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton, Slash, Lukas Nelson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and has appeared alongside his hero, Joe Bonamassa at the Royal Albert Hall.

Toby is off on tour soon. He is playing locally in Leamington in March, but the tickets for the gig have sadly already sold out. He is also playing at the UK Blues Awards in London in April.

Last week, children across Key Stage 2 at Crackley Hall and Crescent put their touch-typing skills to the test in our first annual Foundation touch-typing competition.

The children had been honing their skills in their Computing lessons over the past few weeks and took part in the timed challenge, and the results are in!

The winners of their year group received their certificate in assembly today, as well as our overall Crackley winner and runners up. Notably, Elle Ward, Ding Fan and Theo Cowlishaw were among the winners across the Foundation.

Well done to all who took part!

As every year in school, we develop our understanding and knowledge about staying safe online, your challenge is to create a piece that could explain to others about how to stay safe and behave appropriately on the internet.

What could I do? 

1.    Make a poster for a display in school.

2.    Write a story that teaches young children about the potential dangers of the Internet.

3.    Create a video news report about being safe online.

4.    Make up a song, rap or a poem based on our internet safety theme.

5.    Create a PowerPoint explaining your top tips.

Mr Duigan, the Headmaster, will deliver two short presentations at 10.45am and 11.45pm, staff will be available to talk to prospective parents and current pupils will be performing music and participating in sports activities. There will also be a fun activity trail through the school for visiting children.

It is a great opportunity for prospective families to look around Little Crackers Nursery and Crackley Hall School and meet key members of staff.

This week Junior 6 have linked their RSHE directly with mental health week on Wellbeing Wednesday (and Focused Follow-up Friday!)

Our topic in RSHE was sleep, so we looked in a little more depth at the benefits of sleep, not just from a mood and emotional perspective, but also from a mental health and wellbeing perspective. We explored how much sleep we should actually be having versus what we get. We also looked at both the mental and physical benefits of a good sleep, plus how we can guarantee that peaceful and restful night through a regular bedtime routine.

In addition, we explored the topic of connectivity and created paper chains to show the different links of connectivity. The children wrote words on each chain, firstly showing in what ways we can work to be connected (kindness, empathy, strength, compassion), then they wrote words that they felt make a good friend (loyalty, forgiveness, fun, listening), and finally they wrote words that could help to rebuild any break down in connectivity (smiling, saying sorry, forgiving). Next week, the children will link all the chains together to form a Year 6 Chain of Connectivity!

Finally, we spent some time with Mindfulness colouring to relax our processing mind and engage our creativity.

This week we have been talking about ‘Making Connections’ as part of Children’s Mental Health Week. It was fitting that Junior 5 made connections again with their French penpals through Teams meetings!

The children all asked three familiar questions and one ‘wildcard’ (unexpected) question to their French penpal. The French children did the same to us. Crackley Hall children spoke in French and Ecole Saint Pierre children spoke in English. They learnt a lot about each other! Amongst the French, Harry Potter, turtles as pets and sushi were all very popular! In Junior 5 we have many football fans, dog lovers and quite a few children who think that the food is one of the best things about our country ..with Yorkshire puddings being mentioned a few times!

The French children wanted to know more about the rules of netball and enjoyed seeing our smart school uniforms. Some Junior 5s asked if their penpals enjoyed doing homework and they were quite concerned about their longer school day in France. 

Our Crackley Hall children were enthusiastic, polite and displayed excellent communication skills…. as well as some very good spoken French!

On Wednesday afternoon, Junior 4 were invited over to Princethorpe College, to watch their amazing production of The Addams Family. The production was outstanding and featured an impressive range of acting, singing and dancing, and it was so wonderful to see some of our past pupils in this production; Tom, Martha, Noah, Toby, Bella, Millie L, Millie H, Chloe to name but a few. Mr du Toit, the Head at Princethorpe College, also welcomed and addressed Crackley Hall, which the children enjoyed.  We were generously provided with a scrumptious Princethorpe College cookie and a drink upon departure. Thank you Princethorpe College for inviting us and we hope to visit again soon!

What an exciting week Junior 3 have been having! In Science, we have been testing the strength of different magnets and, after making our predictions, we busily set about testing how many paperclips each of our different magnets could hold. We recorded our results very carefully and were quite astonished to find that the largest magnet was not the strongest. We are looking forward to our next Science lesson when we will be testing a range of materials and metals to find out which are magnetic.

In History, Mrs Jackson-Mayne introduced us to the gruesome process of mummification, as we furthered our knowledge of the ‘Awful Ancient Egyptians’. After a fascinating explanation, we got to test out our skills in mummification on a …tomato! This messy and hilarious process really gave us a hands-on understanding, although we were mighty relieved that we were working with tomatoes and not actual dead bodies! We will have to wait and see what happens to our salt-packed tomatoes over the coming weeks.

We were very lucky to be visited by Mr Ellis this week, who came to talk to us about his experiences in China. We learnt all about food, housing and transport. Mr Ellis gave us all red envelopes and chopsticks to pick sweets up with. We soon became experts at using chopsticks when we were allowed to eat the sweets if we could pick them up! It was a fantastic way to learn about China. Did you know that for every five people in the UK, there are 100 people in China. The average size of an apartment in Hong Kong is 172 sq feet; a standard UK garage is 100 sq feet. Junior 2 were also fascinated by the foods that they eat - ducks' tongues, jellyfish and locusts! A big thank you to Mr Ellis for giving up his time to talk to us.

Junior 1 have continued with their topic of  Transport, and they are really looking forward to their visit to The Transport Museum next week. In Art, everyone has been working hard on their papier mache hot air balloons, carefully layering their balloon with glue and paper. As you can imagine, we are all really looking froward to popping them! Our new book has also been introduced this week and everyone is loving getting to know the story of Where the Wild Things Are. We have all been roaring our terrible roars, gnashing our terrible teeth, rolling our terrible eyes and showing our terrible claws with lots of enthusiasm! Our Maths work has also been lots of practical fun as we have been using the tens frames and base ten to make numbers with tens and ones. Great work, Junior 1!

This week the children have been preparing for their visit to the farm next week. They have been learning to name farm animals, both their adult names and their baby names. There was lots of new vocabulary to learn, including where each animal sleeps. In Maths this week we have been exploring numbers 6, 7 and 8. We have been matching, sorting and exploring different ways to represent each number.

Mrs McAloon and Mrs Burley led Monday's Mission Assembly which launched Children's Mental Health Week with the theme 'Let's Connect!'. This was about encouraging all of us to connect with others in a healthy and meaningful way. We began by reminding ourselves of the school ethos of 'Following the teaching and example of Jesus, we celebrate everybody, every day, creating a school family where we love, learn and grow.' The bible passage of Jesus and the Children was read by Mrs McAloon and this highlighted just how much Jesus loved children and how important they were in our world. We understood how Jesus had connected with children and this helped us to ask how we can connect in our world today and every day? We talked about who we have connections with and how these can be made and kept, and linked this to the connections we have made at school from playing sport, joining the Mini Vinnies, singing at Young Voices, to litter picking via the School Council to name but a few. We were shown the winning poster which Lexi in Junior 6 had created for Wellbeing Wednesday with two big W's within a rainbow heart. We concluded by using our fingers to say a finger prayer for the wider community and world.

Continuing the challenge to compose a verse or hymn for the next verse of Thank You for Every New Good Morning. We have had another amazing entry - this time from Esme in Junior 6:-

Children's Liturgy

This week STEAM club were solving problems with matchsticks.

By either adding, removing or moving a certain number of matchsticks to create new shapes or patterns. Why did we do it? Well it helps to develop short-term memory and imagination, teaches the children to solve problems in an atypical manner and expands their spatial and logical thinking.

Every Tuesday lunchtime busy fingers are working away in Sewing Club. At the moment the excited children are working on something special for Mother’s Day - we are not telling you what though!

With love in the air and Valentine's Day just around the corner, we decided to celebrate love and friendship and to make Valentine's Day even more memorable by letting our close friends, family members and those we care about know just how much we appreciate them. We shared the love all around as we delved into making an adorable pair of doves who wanted to take a break from flying high as they sat on a branch decorated with orange, vibrant blossom surrounded within a big pink heart symbolising their love for each other. We also made bunches of flowers to symbolise appreciation for each other. We created a love carriage to chaperone those smitten with the love bug, transporting them to a restaurant serving romantic meals under a Valentine's tree! We even devised a dog-dating app for our beloved pets!! We built a big heart to represent just how much love we have to share and we all fell in love with a hamster and a panda sitting on a heart shaped rock making friends with a lovestruck elephant! That is definitely love that's built to last!

Brickish Weekend

Don't forget the Brickish Weekend is taking place at the National Space Centre in Leicester from the 11 and 12 March. The National Space Centre are hosting this weekend in celebration of all things Lego and dedicated to the little plastic brick that makes imagination reality. Explore the galleries, which will be packed with amazing creations, thanks to The Brickish Association. See spacecraft, iconic movie scenes, huge magical train lay outs, amazing mathematical machines, and Lego sets from past, present and future.

• Our second Colour Run is due to take place on Friday 19 May 2023. This event will take place on the school field from 4.00pm to 7.00pm, it will be a fun obstacle colour run for all of the family. We will have a DJ, ice cream, face painting and more! We look forward to seeing you there.

The second hand uniform shop now offers boy black trousers, shorts and both female and male white school shirts (some brand new). As always if you may need anything please email uniform@pta.crackleyhall.co.uk.

Our next in person sale will take place on Friday 17 March before and after school. This will allow you to stock up on any summer kit your child may need prior to returning for the new summer term.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: We are no longer accepting period day costumes as we are unable to have further volunteers run this portion of the shop.
