On Saturday, 23 November 2019, a group of our U11A rugby boys travel to the Madejski Stadium in Reading to support London Irish RFC in a European Cup rugby match against Bayonne (France).
This visit was part of a wider day-trip organised for the boys by our U11A coach and Assistant Head, Mr Charles Lamprecht. Originally the team were due to start the day off in Windsor where they had planned to play a fixture against Mr Lamprecht’s previous school, St John’s Beaumont Prep School – a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition. They would have enjoyed a tour of St John’s Beaumont, the oldest purpose-built preparatory school in the country and former junior school to Beaumont College, just a stone’s throw away from Runnymede where the Magna Carta was originally signed. Unfortunately, the fixture had to be cancelled due to water-logged pitches.
All was not lost, however as our Crackley Hall boys were still keen to attend the second part of the day, which was a bonus outing to watch a live professional rugby match. Safely sheltered from the rain, the boys were entertained in what was a ‘try-fest’. The highlight of the day was being chosen to be the guard of honour as the players made their way onto the sodden pitch. It goes without saying that London Irish gained a few fringe supporters on the day.
Our sincere appreciations go out to Mr Patrick Hennessy (Director of Sport at SJB) for his efforts in promoting communal Catholic links between our two schools, as well as London Irish RFC for hosting us and the parental supervision support offered on the day.
The boys certainly enjoyed themselves; laughing their heads off and bonding off the playing pitch is equally important to the development of our Crackley children who will, no doubt, take fond memories of the trip with them in the years to come.
