Learning In RE

Mrs McAloon began the week with a lovely Collective Worship reminding the pupils of how and why we say the Rosary – with a little bit of help from the pupils. As a follow up, our own caretaker, Michael Luis, told us about his little bear that travelled with him to different locations during his time in the army. Around the bear’s neck was a decade of the Rosary.  Mrs Simmonds added that she says a decade of the Rosary, using her ten fingers when she is waiting at traffic lights. Mrs Jackson-Mayne says her Rosary on a dog walk. Take a minute to think…Where do you say your prayers?

It was lovely to see all the children back in the hall again to celebrate Collective Worship and to have our very first Hymn practice.

Pupils across the Key Stages are helping to learn hymns for the Holy Communion Mass which will be celebrated on Friday May 27 at 11.00am.

Junior 3 have been using their artistic and baking talents in RE this week. As it is the month of May, when Catholics make a special effort to say the Rosary, Junior 3 pupils worked in groups to make Rosary bracelets and then sat together in pairs to use their beads to help them say and count a decade of the Hail Mary prayers.

Pupils in Junior 3H worked with Mrs Simmonds to make a crown for our own statue of Mary, while Grace made a beautiful Hope floral display to celebrate the month of Mary.

On Thursday, Mrs Jackson-Mayne launched ‘The Year of the Pilgrimage’. During Collective Worship, the children learned that a pilgrim makes a special spiritual journey. Pupils were reminded that on our journey of life, they need to pack their POSITIVITY; WILLINGNESS TO HELP; AN OPEN MIND and their RESILIENCE so that they can get the most out of life and life’s journey. Children concluded the Collective Worship by waving the drawings of their feet as they sang, ‘One More Step’.

Listening to the words of Captain Tom we realised that we ‘Never walk life’s journey Alone’. Our friends, parents, teachers and God are always there by our side.

Later in the week, pupils experienced what it was like to make unleavened bread. Following on from their exciting trip to the Synagogue in February, they each made flat bread crackers which are eaten during the Jewish feast of the Passover. Next week they will take part in their own Passover Feast and find out how this links with the Last Supper and the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

In Junior 2 the children did a slow reveal of the supper from the Road to Emmaus painting.  Without the children knowing in advance the contents of the painting, as each square was revealed the children thought what the painting could be about.  Some thought it was Jesus in the tomb, David and Goliath, Jesus in the temple, the cellar where the wine was made at the Wedding Feast at Cana, St Valentine, or a Roman temple.  Fantastic reflection and thought J2.

Poppy in Junior 1 is fantastic in RE and this week played a wonderful part as Jesus in our Resurrection re-enactment.
