Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

The heavy snowfall at the weekend resulted in a shorter than planned school week but we managed to fit in an enormous amount in these four days.  On Tuesday our J5 and J4 classes spent the day at Princethorpe preparing for the Advent Service which took place on Wednesday evening.  I am sure those of you who attended on Wednesday enjoyed this marvellous occasion in the stunning Princethorpe Chapel and hopefully were able to stay for the hospitality after the event.  Thank you to all of the staff and students involved; hearing the voices of the children in the Chapel is quite an emotional occasion and I hope you all experience this at some point during your time at Crackley Hall.  I was immensely proud of our children and would like to thank them, Mrs Olden, Mrs Wildey and Miss Kefalas for helping us prepare for Christmas.  I was delighted to be able to speak to a few parents during the evening but apologies if I did not manage to say ‘hello’ to you all personally.  I should like to thank Mr Hester and his wonderful staff for their warm hospitality, both at the rehearsal and on the evening itself.  It was lovely to have the assistance of two of the College prefects as well.

Wednesday was also the day of our Crackley Hall Christmas lunch.  To cook a Christmas lunch for all staff, nursery and school children is a huge undertaking for Mr Sansum and his small, but very capable, team.  The organisation was slick and the food was delicious; the children particularly enjoyed the choices of pudding.  I was pleased to host Fr Kevin, Fr David and Mr Darkes, who all expressed their appreciation.

On Thursday there were a few unusual characters in School, including Tom the chimney sweep who you may glimpse amongst the photographs later in this newsletter.  The J6 classes participated in a Victorian Day and fully immersed themselves in the spirit of the event.  I have received some wonderful feedback from those present, including parents.  Thank you very much to the staff and parents who helped on the day.

I was pleased to see a wide variety of Christmas jumpers today.  In fact, I do not believe there were any two the same which is quite surprising.  Donations for wearing the jumpers have been collected and the money will be sent to Save the Children charity very soon.  Thank you to Mrs George for arranging this.

Thank you and ‘well done’ to our musicians who performed at this morning’s assembly.  The flute group, Thomas, Erin and Alexander were all excellent.  We celebrated many things today including stars of the week, staff and student birthdays, music examination achievements, J6 steward responsibilities and the end of an era for a special member of staff.  Mr James Ferris will be leaving Crackley Hall at the end of this term and he was joined by his young daughter, Maisie, at the front of assembly this morning where we could all say goodbye to him and wish him well on the next stage of his career; it was equally lovey to see his wife, Simone, at assembly as well.  James will be missed as a friendly face around school, an encouraging sports coach and a dynamic teacher.  I hope that James will stay in contact and I am sure that our sports team will be meeting him again soon on the rugby pitch!

I would like to congratulate Yichen Pan on her being selected to be part of the National Children’s Orchestra.  What a fantastic achievement!  She really is a most outstanding musician and, I know, works very hard to supplement her incredible talent.

Although they got off to a great start, the England cricket team seem to be letting Australia back into the third test in Perth.  Hopefully England can bowl Australia out quickly tomorrow and set up a victory that will add to the interest of the series.

Please do look to support the PTA Winter Ball – we have 50 people signed up already and it promises to be a lovely evening.

There are only two school days next week but I will be writing a brief Chronicle to end the term.

I wish you and your family a relaxing weekend.

God Bless

Robert Duigan

Chen Chen Says 'Cello' To National Children's Orchestra

Fresh from tickling the ivories at the recent Crackley Hall Advent Service, Chen Chen Pan (J6L) has proved that there's more than one string to her bow by securing a place within the prestigious National Children's Orchestra.

Chen Chen chose to augment her half hour of practice each night with a short audition in Birmingham one day last October and the rest as they say is 'history'. Now at the lofty heights of Grade 6, on what is her second instrument, she can take pride in converting her initial interest in the cello during J3 to an almost total command of this difficult to master instrument.

Modestly she adds, "I like the sound that my instrument named 'Chip', makes and I hope to go to many places and perform to many, many people."

Congratulations Chen Chen!

'Twas A Trip To 1897 For J6 On Thursday

For one day only, the assembled J6 cohort, teachers and their helpers were transported back in time to 22 June 1897, the day of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, courtesy of History off the Page. The Gables provided the setting for a village school from the Victorian era, where Master Gray welcomed his charges to sit and learn a curriculum engineered to whether they were a 'master' or 'girl'.

A different style of teaching therefore awaited Crackley's most senior pupils. The teacher was to be addressed as 'sir' at all times, discipline was strict, whilst manners and decency were of paramount importance. And so, Master Gray's class eagerly set about their morning's lessons.

For the boys, preparation for the nation's economy and industry required an instruction in the British Empire and Mathematics. The girls were challenged to copy Bible passages and dictation, events that 'might' in the words of Master Gray develop them into a credible supportive wife for their future 'heads of house'. Still, all (especially the girls) adopted their roles for the day and immersed themselves in all things Victorian. Whether it be a dip pen or chalk in hand, they availed themselves of the opportunity and latterly finished some beautiful Christmas decorations.

In the afternoon, the class of 48 strong were challenged to select, learn and perform an act of their choice from a contemporary Victorian Music Hall bill. Who could forget how the pupils came together to put on a fine performance, where strongmen, comedians, hearty songs and a flea circus jostled for the limelight and because of their excellence, will forever remain in our memories. Certainly our modern day teaching practitioners, Mrs Lammas and Mrs Horan were impressed, as according to the latter, "It brought history alive and was a fabulous way to end their term on the Victorians."

It's Go, Go, Go For Team Crackley In JLR Primary Schools Challenge

Each year, Jaguar Land Rover runs its 'F1 in Schools - Jaguar Primary School Challenge', and, once again, Crackley Hall are excited to be putting a team of four forward. Our team is called ‘Speed Stingers’ and we are taking part in the Regional Finals in April next year.

The link for more information about the JLR Primary School Challenge is: www.f1inschools.co.uk/primary. Please take a look if you have time. You can see the high standard of the contenders and take a look at the cars made. It’s such an exciting time and our Crackley team think it’s very important to promote interest in education and careers for the future generation with STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Maths).

If you work with or for a company that you think may be interested in supporting 'Speed Stingers', the team would like to invite you to into school after Christmas to watch their presentation to see if you would like to help them through sponsorship or support more formally.

The presentation will take place on Wednesday 24 January at 4.00pm. If you would like to find out more about sponsoring the team or to attend this event, please email Mrs Spillane - margaretspillane@crackleyhall.co.uk  and she will send you further details.

Many thanks.

Festive Knits Raise ££££'s (Copy)

On Friday 15 December, Christmas jumpers of all colours and shapes  were proudly displayed on the school 'body' in the now annual occassion of Christmas Jumper day in aid of Save the Children. The eclectic fashion mix was made sweeter still by the single pound coins that were simultaneously collected across our campus.

Drum roll please...we've raised over £237 for Save the Children! What a fantastic achievement - well done one and all and thank you once again to young Rocco George (J6L), who thought that it would be great if Crackley participated in such a simple and wonderful idea.

Yummy Scrummy, Christmas Lunch Now in My Tummy!

Not even the glacial conditions earlier this week could separate Head Chef Ian Samsum and the mountain of foodstuffs that presented themselves to his team's preparation tables. So it was with sleeves rolled, approns on and sharp knives that Dawn, Wendy, Donna and Ian tamed the produce into a feast for both eye and tummy. The numbers are eye watering; 30kg of potatoes, 30kg of turkey, 400 sausages, 22kg of vegetables and 20l of gravy - and that's just the main course! Who could forget the homemade mouth watering mince pie or chocolate coated shortbread to finish.

We genuinely don't know how they do it, or for that matter, ever want them to stop. Thanks so much for making a special day even better!

New Guitar Ensemble From January

There will be an opportunity for those who play guitar to join a new school guitar ensemble in January. This will take place on a Tuesday lunchtime for a half hour session. Playing in an ensemble gives your child the chance to take part in group performances both in school concerts and assembley performances. It greatly enhances their sight-reading and musicianship skills, as well as being a fun activity to meet new friends, and gain confidence in public performance.

The prerequisite for joining the group will be to have had at least one term's worth of guitar tuition and to be able to read music. The level of reading that is required is equivalent to initial grade/prep test/step 2 graded exam level or to be approaching the end of the Guitarist's Way 1.  If you are unsure as to how far your son or daughter has progressed, they are welcome to see Mrs Olden to decide.

Parents are advised that they should sign up using the SOCS system.

Chess Club Checkmates

The Chronicle is pleased to report that many of Mr James' Chess Club regulars have completed their Strategic Planning Course. Not only this, but two of their number, namely Connor Horan (J4H) and Leo Warne (J1G), upsized their Basic Course certificate with a fine medal. Well done one and all, with skills like these on show Crackley pupils have surely become the ones to beat!

Cancellations

Nursery News

We have had such an exciting week this week, even though it was a bit shorter than expected! We have a new addition to our play and learning resources: a fantastic interactive screen. We would like to say an ENORMOUS thank you to those who sorted it all out and fitted it, and thank you Mr Ostrowski for setting everything up and showing us how to get going. The children are loving it, and are already playing the keyboard, drums and cymbals, completing onscreen jigsaws of their own photos, and practicing their drawing and writing skills on the notepad.

Everyone from our youngest toddler to the fabulous four-year-olds can access it, and the staff are enjoying it too!  Alongside polishing up our technology skills we have also been cooking with Miss Gail and Miss Anupa, the mince pies tasted as good as they looked – obviously Mrs O'Carroll-Bailey checked just to make sure!

Please check the newsletter for all the important dates, so that you know when to come back in the New Year, and we wish you all a happy, fun, family and friend-filled Christmas. Have a great time, stay safe and we will see you next year!
