Welcome to The Chronicle, Crackley Hall School's e-newsletter.

A very exciting week for Years 6 who enjoyed a super residential in Aberdovey in Wales. Well done to everyone who took part, we were impressed with your enthusiasm for all the activities.

Back in school it has been just as busy with plenty going on in lessons and we even had time to enjoy some sport. Do keep an eye on the Calendar and Events section, as there is lots planned for the term ahead and read on to find out what else has been happening in school this week.

This week’s cover photo is …

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

This week our Junior 6’s have enjoyed an Outward Bound residential in the beautiful coastal setting of Aberdovey and I was lucky enough to join them from Wednesday afternoon.  There will be many photographs and stories to share over the coming days and I would like to thank Mrs Horan for organising this visit, Mr Stedeford for stepping in and attending on Tuesday at short notice, Mrs Vaughan, Mrs Thomas, Miss Broadbent and Mrs Carne for accompanying the trip and not forgetting the school office for overseeing the arrangements and keeping parents updated via social media.  Everyone had a wonderful time exploring the local area and activities carried on into the evenings with team building exercises and cook outs.  The children grew so much as individuals, meeting challenges and getting to know themselves better and the Outward Bound Centre and staff looked after us exceptionally well and I hope that we can use the centre again in the future.

I have recently received the news that the Junior 5 pupils who entered the group choral speaking competition at the Nuneaton Festival were placed first.  This is wonderful news to end the week and my thanks to Mrs Wildey for preparing the children for this competition.  I look forward to hearing more about the even next week.

My thanks to Mr Cottrill for hosting Celebration Assembly this morning.  I have been told that there was quite a range of external awards presented today and a wonderful performance from Lizzie, Amy, Isla Josie-Jean and Evie.  Our Stars of the Week were: Ethan, Arjan, Delilah, Rory, Harry, Jess, Charlotte, Jude, Phoebe M, Lizzie, Suzie and Lexi.  Congratulations to you all on your super work.  Next week’s assembly will be for Reception, Junior 1 and 2 and on 20 May, we will celebrate the work and achievements of Junior 5 and 6.

Next week Junior 3 will begin their swimming lessons on Monday at the Xcel Centre. On Tuesday, during the day, the whole school will be participating in a Robotics day which has been kindly funded by the PTA.  From 4.00pm, Junior 5 parents have been invited to attend my information meeting regarding secondary school choices.  Please do not worry if you are unable to attend as I will ensure all parents receive a copy of the presentation.  On Thursday, Junior 4 will travel to Princethorpe College to participate in a music workshop.  This is an annual event and one that is very much enjoyed by our pupils as they experience the music provision at Princethorpe College.  The long awaited 75th Anniversary Gala Ball will take place on Saturday 14 May and I am grateful to Mrs Jenny Vaughan, the Princethorpe Marketing Team and the Estates Team for their efforts ensuring that this event can now take place.  I look forward to attending, celebrating the history of Crackley Hall School and seeing many familiar faces next week.

Holiday Club will be operating during the half term if there is sufficient requirement from parents.  Due to the extra bank holiday, holiday club will only run for 3 days; May 30 until June 1 and bookings will be able to be made via My School Portal next week.

As you will have noticed, there are roadworks planned on the Coventry Road, approaching school, next week.  I have been in contact with the local council and the contractors and have been assured that this will take place between the hours of 9.00am and 3.00pm.  However, there are times when parents, and staff, need to access school during the planned closure and this will be possible but there will be delays and a ‘gatesman/banksman’ will need to assist with access.  Children will be provided with safe, accompanied, access to the school field for the duration of the closure.

As mentioned last week, Miss Collins is now Mrs Brannen and I am delighted that I can now share a photograph of the wedding day which can be found later in this edition.  Miss Fisher, our brass music teacher, will be leaving us next week but staying within the Foundation and we wish her well for the future and thank her for her contributions over the past few years.  Mrs Olden is currently organising alternative provision for those children who have brass instrument lessons.

Whilst we do not have the bank holiday weekend to look forward to, it does promise to be fine weather.  I hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

God bless,

Mr Duigan

Important Information

Princethorpe Admissions – Information for Junior 4 Parents – Express Your Interest In Princethorpe College - Reminder

With your child approaching the end of Year 4 many parents will be starting to think in earnest about senior school options for their son or daughter. This is a very good time to begin researching schools and booking onto open events. Once you have visited you will soon know if the school feels like the right fit for your child and if they would be happy there. This will also give you time to understand the admissions process thoroughly, deadlines for registering and requirements for scholarships etc.

Pupils at Crackley Hall School may naturally already be more familiar with the College than other senior schools. Many have siblings at Princethorpe or have had the chance to visit over the years for performances, services in the Chapel or sporting events.

Together with Crackley we also put a special programme of activity together for Foundation Prep School pupils as the children move through Year 4 to Year 6, so that by the time they take their Entrance Exams in the November of Year 6 they feel relaxed and comfortable here.

How to enquire for Princethorpe College

Although your child attends a Foundation Prep School we do not assume an interest in the College until you express one, so if you would like to be added to our enquiry database please complete this short online form here.

Once added to our database you will receive a prospectus pack (including the current Admissions and Entrance Exams booklet and a past English paper), invitations to upcoming Open Events and other opportunities to visit plus reminders about key admissions dates including the deadline for registrations, scholarships and bursaries. You will also automatically receive our Admissions Update e-newsletter, which is published twice a year, the latest edition of which can be viewed here.

A dedicated Year 5 Taster Day and Parents’ Information Session for interested Crackley families is also arranged for the Trinity Term.

The Princethorpe Admissions Process

Visit – We encourage all prospective families to visit us several times; there are a range of opportunities available including termly Open Events, the option to meet the Headmaster, Ed Hester and have a tour with our Sixth Formers and informal events such as our PTA Summer Fête and Motoring Festival or Christmas Fair.

Choral Speaking Group Come First At Nuneaton Festival Of Arts

Junior 5 Choral Speaking group were a bundle of excitement and nerves on their way to the Nuneaton Festival of Arts on Tuesday afternoon. Competing in this highly competitive festival is an annual tradition at which Crackley Hall groups often excel at, so we knew we had to be at our very best. The children calmly got into their positions on stage in front of the adjudicator and performed Pandora’s Box by Paul Perro and Refugees by Brian Bilston, beautifully. The adjudicator critiqued their performances at Commended and Distinction levels respectively, which landed the group a first position and the coveted Meredith Cup for Choral Speaking!  He commented on their strong focus, control, and energy which, together with their style and skill, engaged the audience emotionally and passionately. We are so proud of their commitment to this lunchtime club for which they were richly rewarded. A fantastic achievement!

100% Pass Rate In Latest LAMDA Exams

The results are in! Junior 5 and 6 achieved a fantastic 100% pass rate in their recent Speaking Verse and Prose LAMDA examinations, with most children achieving the highest categories of Merit or Distinction. The children had been busy learning poems and prose ready to present to the examiner who visited us in March. The months of hard work really paid off and all the children were able to perform their pieces with confidence, clarity of diction, good volume and engaging vocal and facial expression. These crucial skills will go on to serve them well as they progress through their years at school and beyond. Public speaking is an even more essential skill than ever in today’s workplace, and we actively teach the Communication LAMDA curriculum to all of our children at Crackley Hall to prepare them for life ahead. Well done Junior 5 and 6 – we are so proud of you.

Stay 'n' Play Forest Fun

It was wonderful to welcome everyone to Stay ‘n’ Play’s Forest Fun on Wednesday 4 May. Despite the drizzle, the children all had lots of fun while their adults sheltered underneath the big trees. The session took place in the Crackley Hall’s wood at the back of the school and was led by Mrs Clark, the school’s Forest School Practitioner. The children had a choice of a hands-on activity planting sunflower seeds, as well as plenty of free play, in the woods, in the mud kitchen, on the hammocks, the rope swings and even on an old saddle. It was great to have everyone back at school and we hope our Stay 'n' Players enjoyed the fun!

Learning In Action

Junior 5

Junior 5 have been channelling their inner genies in Music and Drama lessons this week. We have been practising how to loosen up, throw away our inhibitions and dance like there’s no-one watching when coming on stage as genies in our rehearsals for Aladdin’s Friend Like Me song. Cartwheels, somersaults, springs, stag leaps, break dancing, body-popping were all explored in our attempts to bring life and energy to this cracking song. Mrs Paphitis taught us a fantastic fast-moving dance routine which really challenged our minds and bodies which, after a few practices, we started to perfect. Keep practising, Junior 5. You are going to be stage superstars in this year’s Summer Show!

Junior 4

Junior 4 have had another fabulous week of learning! In History, they have completed a wonderful Viking display. They have also been 'green fingered' and have seen their sunflower seeds starting to burst with life! In English they have begun studying a new genre-short stories and after listening to their first book/story about a girl who exaggerated how she hurt herself, Junior 4 became authors, and wrote their very own exciting and detailed short stories. They were fabulous and engaging. Well done!

Junior 3

Junior 3 have had a brilliant, slightly shorter week, making excellent use of their creative skills. Alongside baking unleavened bread for a Passover meal to help the Holy Communicants, the children have also been busy painting their own Greek vases and finding out about repeating patterns from ancient history. In Maths, we have been actively furthering our fractions knowledge and exploring equivalence, comparing, and adding fractions along with our times tables. Who knew they could be so useful?  As part of their new science topic on plants, Junior 3 scientists undertook a very delicate procedure in their science lesson this week – a flower dissection. Goggles on, to prevent any pollen getting in our eyes, we carefully peeled back the layers of our daffodils and tulips to reveal so many different parts to a flower. We were amazed to find out that there is so much more to them than just petals. Each part has its own special function - just like each part of our own bodies. We can’t wait to learn more about this amazing topic and explore the flowers in our own gardens and parks.

Junior 2

This week has flown by! The children have continued investigating length in Maths and working through lots of problem-solving questions. We have been writing character descriptions of the old man in the book we are studying and loved thinking about how he would make a good friend for someone of a similar age based on his characteristics. Science saw us investigating minibeasts and conducting our own research using iPads. Next week, we will use these skills to create a fact file on our favourite rainforest animal. Year 2 are extending their knowledge of the layers of the rainforest and have some fun actions to remember them. In Music, the children are enthusiastically learning songs for the end of year production and Mrs Olden is very impressed. Religious Education lessons have focused on the Road to Emmaus and the Rosary and the children have even made their own, we wonder if they can remember how to use it?

Junior 1

Having a long weekend meant that Junior 1 were raring to go again when they were back in school on Tuesday. We have begun to look at how to create a fact file about a minibeast and learnt the importance of headings, sub-headings, and the use of a ruler to underline them! This is something we are going to build on this coming term. We have continued to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s this week in Maths; this time making groups and sharing to introduce the idea of division. In Geography we found out about a very cold place – Antarctica. After some initial research about the place, we had a quiz to complete, answering questions about what we had learnt and then drawing some animals that live there. In Forest School we went on a minibeast hunt, linking in with our English and Science topics and managed to find centipedes, hoverflies, spiders, ants, earwigs, and beetles!

Reception

This week in Reception the children have been learning about trains and thinking about seaside destinations in the UK. We have been pretending to go on our own train adventures and taking part in some seaside activities such as jumping over the waves, building a sandcastle, looking for crabs in the rock pools and eating fish and chips. This has led into some fantastic writing about what we would see and do at the beach.

Spiritual

Learning In RE

Mrs McAloon began the week with a lovely Collective Worship reminding the pupils of how and why we say the Rosary – with a little bit of help from the pupils. As a follow up, our own caretaker, Michael Luis, told us about his little bear that travelled with him to different locations during his time in the army. Around the bear’s neck was a decade of the Rosary.  Mrs Simmonds added that she says a decade of the Rosary, using her ten fingers when she is waiting at traffic lights. Mrs Jackson-Mayne says her Rosary on a dog walk. Take a minute to think…Where do you say your prayers?

It was lovely to see all the children back in the hall again to celebrate Collective Worship and to have our very first Hymn practice.

Pupils across the Key Stages are helping to learn hymns for the Holy Communion Mass which will be celebrated on Friday May 27 at 11.00am.

Junior 3 have been using their artistic and baking talents in RE this week. As it is the month of May, when Catholics make a special effort to say the Rosary, Junior 3 pupils worked in groups to make Rosary bracelets and then sat together in pairs to use their beads to help them say and count a decade of the Hail Mary prayers.

Pupils in Junior 3H worked with Mrs Simmonds to make a crown for our own statue of Mary, while Grace made a beautiful Hope floral display to celebrate the month of Mary.

On Thursday, Mrs Jackson-Mayne launched ‘The Year of the Pilgrimage’. During Collective Worship, the children learned that a pilgrim makes a special spiritual journey. Pupils were reminded that on our journey of life, they need to pack their POSITIVITY; WILLINGNESS TO HELP; AN OPEN MIND and their RESILIENCE so that they can get the most out of life and life’s journey. Children concluded the Collective Worship by waving the drawings of their feet as they sang, ‘One More Step’.

Listening to the words of Captain Tom we realised that we ‘Never walk life’s journey Alone’. Our friends, parents, teachers and God are always there by our side.

Later in the week, pupils experienced what it was like to make unleavened bread. Following on from their exciting trip to the Synagogue in February, they each made flat bread crackers which are eaten during the Jewish feast of the Passover. Next week they will take part in their own Passover Feast and find out how this links with the Last Supper and the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

In Junior 2 the children did a slow reveal of the supper from the Road to Emmaus painting.  Without the children knowing in advance the contents of the painting, as each square was revealed the children thought what the painting could be about.  Some thought it was Jesus in the tomb, David and Goliath, Jesus in the temple, the cellar where the wine was made at the Wedding Feast at Cana, St Valentine, or a Roman temple.  Fantastic reflection and thought J2.

Poppy in Junior 1 is fantastic in RE and this week played a wonderful part as Jesus in our Resurrection re-enactment.

Crackley Hall Claim Back The Schools' Shield!

On Sunday 1 May, pupils in Junior 5 and Junior 6 laced up their trainers (some more tightly than others!) and headed to the hills in Abbey Fields to take part in the May Day Schools Challenge. As part of the May Day 10km run, organised by Kenilworth Runners. Four schools in the area entered teams to compete.

Crackley Hall has previously has won three times out of four, just missing out last year when they were beaten by local rivals St Nicks, and were overjoyed to claim back the shield this year!

George came in a very close second place overall and Elle was first girl across the line, who ran a really fantastic time despite losing a shoe in the first 100m!!

A massive well done to all our runners - Sid, Ollie, Seb, Jack L, Agnes, Matilda, Jack P-G, Leo, Amelia, Willow and Isabella, you did Crackley proud.

Ballet Club Pupils Take Their Preparatory Exam

Last Sunday some of Miss Denise's ballet students took their British Theatre Dance Association Preparatory ballet grade exam. As well as their practising in their regular Thursday lunchtime club lessons the children had some extra lessons at the studio to help them prepare. Miss Denise told us, "All the pupils looked very smart in their ballet uniforms and were extremely well behaved and polite on the day. They should receive their results within the next six weeks. I am hugely proud of them, and they certainly did Crackley Hall School proud too!"

Well done everyone!

Lego Club News

Continuing Lego’s Club’s passion for building, this week was no exception as super vehicles, superheroes and monster trucks all rolled into one whilst powering through obstacles with lightning agility and mighty speed. Inventing chunky tyres, resilient suspensions and demonstrating daring determination, these trucks ploughed over cars, vans, and lorries with boundless energy and power. That was until the super vets clinic complained how the noise was bothering the newly born bunnies and lambs who needed to roam the green fields freely without any disturbance after witnessing recent Star Wars Day battles. With gravity-defying stunts, the monster trucks retreated hastily to allow the animals to enjoy and explore again the peace and tranquillity of the lush pastureland.  Aww how adorable.

We are looking for any outgrown uniform that you are happy to donate to the second hand uniform shop. We are in need of all items, but mainly any sport kit and summer items for standard daily uniform.

As always, please put your donations in the labelled box in the front porch of the school. We appreciate your help. Thank you!
