Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

Welcome to the Trinity Term, traditionally one of our busiest terms in school and I am sure this year will be no exception.  I hope that all the Crackley families enjoyed a restful Easter break and I would also like to welcome our new families to School.

We started this week on a very positive note when I invited a representative from Mary’s Meals to receive a cheque for £5,000.  She delivered a most informative assembly.  This outstanding amount was raised during this year’s Skipathon co-ordinated by Mrs Simmonds.  It was the highest amount we have collectively raised for a charity and I am grateful to the Crackley community for supporting the charity so generously.  Mary’s Meals will keep me informed about how the funds will be helping feed so many school children in impoverished countries around the world; we really have made an enormous difference.

Our Reception Classes have been busy in the woods today when they were out visiting the local area with Mrs Allen, Mrs Green and Mrs Malcolm and Mrs Brannen.  We are very lucky to have such wonderful surroundings on our doorstep which children can explore.  You will have no doubt notice a new surname in the Reception Class teaching list; Miss Collins became Mrs Brannen earlier this week.  The day was shared with close family and the bride looked radiant; we send, Mrs Brannen and her husband, our very best wishes for a happy marriage.

Mrs Burley co-ordinated a school council litter pick today which is the first time the school council have come together to benefit the local community in this way.  Armed with litter pickers and a keen eye for discarded rubbish, the school council have made another positive change to the environment.  It is hoped that this will become a regular occurrence.  My thanks to Mrs Burley for co-ordinating such activities.

Next week, Junior 6 will be embarking on a residential visit to Wales.  I am thankful that we have been able to organise a residential visit for the Junior 6 cohort after 2 years of not having the ability to stay overnight.  The visit to Aberdovey promises to be a fun, active and challenging few days and one that I am very much looking forward to joining.  I hope that the children will have a memorable time and will be able to recount tales for years to come.  There will be more news on this visit next week and updates can be followed on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

I hope that you have all received copies of the Trinity Term calendar card which were sent home at the beginning of the week. Since going to print, some dates have changed and the most up-to-date calendar of events can be found on the school website.  Two dates have been removed from the calendar and these are: NSPCC day and World Maths Day on 6 and 5 May respectively.

I was delighted to be able to confirm to Junior 3 and 4 parents that swimming has returned, at a new venue, to the calendar.  Junior 3 will begin their swimming lessons on Monday 9 May and Junior 4 attended their first session on Tuesday this week.  Children should wear the sports kit on the day of lessons which will allow for quick and easy changing at the venue.  I understand that the Aquarius swimming scheme is particularly good with children being continually assessed in each lesson.

Mrs McAloon hosted Celebration Assembly this week and Junior 5 and 6 were in attendance.  Our stars of the week were: Jacob, George, Amaya, Jai, Zach, Alfie, Gwen, Harriet, Elora, Ria, Charlie, Jay, Grace and Kyra.  There was an impressive collection of Junior da Vinci’s, Bronze Awards and achievements outside of school today.  My thanks to Ms McAloon for stepping in and to Mairen for performing at the end of assembly. Congratulations to everyone on your achievements this week.  Next week’s assembly will be for Junior 3 and 4 and Friday 13 May will be for Reception, Junior 1 and 2.

I am sure you will have seen, on the approach to school, that there is advanced notice of a road closure which is scheduled to take place between 12 and 20 May.  Following contact with the council and the contractor, it has been confirmed that this should not affect our usual morning and carline procedures as the closure is between 9.00am and 3.00pm.  However, parents arriving between these times are asked to bear in mind severe delays as a gates man (banksman) is required to allow vehicles access to school or the residential area.  In order to minimise disruption at carline, please do not try to arrive any earlier than 3.00pm during the planned closure.  We have been guaranteed safe crossing over the Coventry Road when using the sports fields and the major works will take place on 19 and 20 May when the new road surface is laid.

I hope you enjoy the extended Bank Holiday weekend.

God bless,

Mr Duigan

Important Information

Princethorpe Admissions – Information for Junior 4 Parents – Express Your Interest In Princethorpe College

With your child approaching the end of Year 4 many parents will be starting to think in earnest about senior school options for their son or daughter. This is a very good time to begin researching schools and booking onto open events. Once you have visited you will soon know if the school feels like the right fit for your child and if they would be happy there. This will also give you time to understand the admissions process thoroughly, deadlines for registering and requirements for scholarships etc.

Pupils at Crackley Hall School may naturally already be more familiar with the College than other senior schools. Many have siblings at Princethorpe or have had the chance to visit over the years for performances, services in the Chapel or sporting events.

Together with Crackley we also put a special programme of activity together for Foundation Prep School pupils as the children move through Year 4 to Year 6, so that by the time they take their Entrance Exams in the November of Year 6 they feel relaxed and comfortable here.

How to enquire for Princethorpe College

Although your child attends a Foundation Prep School we do not assume an interest in the College until you express one, so if you would like to be added to our enquiry database please complete this short online form here.

Once added to our database you will receive a prospectus pack (including the current Admissions and Entrance Exams booklet and a past English paper), invitations to upcoming Open Events and other opportunities to visit plus reminders about key admissions dates including the deadline for registrations, scholarships and bursaries. You will also automatically receive our Admissions Update e-newsletter, which is published twice a year, the latest edition of which can be viewed here.

A dedicated Year 5 Taster Day and Parents’ Information Session for interested Crackley families is also arranged for the Trinity Term.

The Princethorpe Admissions Process

Visit – We encourage all prospective families to visit us several times; there are a range of opportunities available including termly Open Events, the option to meet the Headmaster, Ed Hester and have a tour with our Sixth Formers and informal events such as our PTA Summer Fête and Motoring Festival or Christmas Fair.

Crackley Hall School Raises £5,000 For Mary’s Meals

Crackley Hall School was delighted to present a cheque for £5,000 to the charity Mary’s Meals. The cheque was presented to Corina O’Brien, Supporter Engagement Officer, from Mary’s Meals in assembly on Monday 25 April, the first day back of the Trinity term.

The money was raised back in March when pupils from the school took part in a charity skipathon. Organised by the school’s Minnie Vinnies club, the junior arm of the charity St Vincent de Paul, and Mini Vinnies’ Co-ordinator, Mrs Dolores Simmonds, pupils had enthusiastically hopped, skipped and jumped backwards and forwards across the school hall.

In the assembly, Corina O’Brien spoke to the children about the work of Mary’s Meals who now provide a daily meal in a place of education to over 2 million children across the world. She shared how it takes just £15.90 to feed a child for a year and how the children’s donations would provide a whopping 62,500 meals. Corina said, “A huge thank you to all the children and their sponsors. We know there are children across the world who need our help and that when they go to school and have a meal then they gain both an education and a brighter future.”

The cheque was presented by Rob Duigan, Headmaster and pupils Lily, Marley and Nirvair.

Mr Duigan said, “Well done to all the skippers who took part and a big thank you to those who generously donated to the skipathon. We had a lot of fun and laughter on the day, and I am really proud of all the children for raising such a fantastic total.”

Summer Show Name Competition

As many of you are aware, preparations for the Summer Show are underway. The children are invited to come up with a name for the show.

The two shows we are performing songs from are: The Lion King and Aladdin.

The name can be anything. We have previously had Magical Moments Of Musicals, A Spoonful Of Naughty and Our 4ever Musical Favourites. All suggestions are welcome and one will be selected and used.

Entries need to be in by Monday 16 May and given into the Office on a named piece of paper. The Performing Arts Team along with Mr Duigan will then select a winner.

We look forward to seeing what you come up with. Good Luck!

Junior 6 Receive Their Leavers' Hoodies

Junior 6 received their hoodies and caps yesterday ahead of their residential trip next week and they were all quick to put them on. They looked amazing, so we took a quick photo of them to share.

The children are all excited about their upcoming trip to the beautiful Aberdovey in North Wales and were asking lots of questions; we know they are really going to enjoy themselves!

Leavers’ hoodies are now a tradition for most schools, and we know that their hoodies will always be a tangible memory of their time at Crackley Hall and their fellow pupils. They provide a sense of belonging and of community and in the long distant future we hope they will prompt wonderful memories of their school days.

Learning In Action

Junior 6

It has been wonderful to welcome Junior 6 back to school this week and to start a new term of learning.  We began by starting a new core text – The Lion and the Unicorn by Shirley Hughes.  This links to our History theme this half-term and we soon realised that the backdrop to the story is set against the bombings of London during the Second World War. We met the main character, Lenny, and empathised with his thoughts and feelings as he endured the difficulties of air raids and missing his father. We listened to what an air raid siren sounded like and looked at photographs of some of the devastation that these caused. We thought about some of the imagery involved in the story and why it might have been called, The Lion and the Unicorn.  We are looking forward to seeing how this story develops over the next few weeks.

Junior 5

In Junior 5 this week we have started the term as we mean to go on – heads down in a good book! Immersing themselves in the wonderous and magical land of Narnia! The children have been taking inspiration from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and other books to improve their skills as storytellers. In particular, using their fantastic vocabulary to grab the reader’s attention from the very first sentence. We were overjoyed with the responses to the Junior 5 Extreme Reading Challenge – it is a source of constant pleasure to see the children being passionate about reading.

Junior 4

This week, Junior 4 have been expertly presenting a topic of their choice to the rest of their classmates. We have had a range of topics and it has been wonderful to see everyone’s enthusiasm, creativity and presenting skills. It was also lovely to see so many different interpretations of the task, with some relying on a PowerPoint presentation, some handing out interesting resources and we even had food, QR codes and seeds used to hook the audience! All of the children have settled back into school life beautifully and we are looking forward to a busy term that will include lots of outdoor learning, plenty of sport, practising for the school production and many more exciting events.

Junior 3

It has been a delight to welcome Junior 3 back to school after the Easter break and especially to welcome two new members to our classes. We have been thrilled to find out that we are learning all about the Ancient Greeks this half-term and have already read several versions of the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. We have also put our acting skills to the test and performed our own retellings of this magnificent myth. We are busy continuing our understanding of fractions by finding fractions of amounts, using our knowledge of our times tables and division. We are also excited to find out about the ancient ways of making pottery and we have been exploring Grecian urns and vases. Our plan is to create a coil pot in the next few weeks and see just how easy or difficult it was.

Junior 2

Junior 2 have had a brilliant start to the Trinity Term. The children are very excited about our Rainforest topic and we enjoyed sharing some projects that had been completed over the Easter break. We have had a very practical week in and out of the classroom for Maths as we have started a measuring unit. In English, we are using The Tin Forest book and the children have found this book quite magical. The Tin Forest by Helen Ward is a beautiful and poetic fable written about an old man who lives in a Tin Forest, otherwise known as a rubbish dump of unloved things nobody wanted anymore. The old man wishes for a better place to live. With his own initiative, will he make this junkyard into a wonderland? The summer months lend themselves to outdoor learning and we chose our Science topics to reflect this. Junior 2 were introduced to microhabitats this week and even created their own. It is also so wonderful to see so many children taking part in our extra-curricular clubs. We are very excited for all of the learning we will be doing this term.

Junior 1

After having a lovely Easter break Junior 1 have come back full of energy and a renewed eagerness to learn. There are new topics in all subjects, the most exciting is ‘Minibeasts’ in English and Science. We have looked in detail at the life cycle of a butterfly and how to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth. In Maths we have begun the topic of multiplication and have been busy using counters and other equipment to create groups and represent our questions using these concrete materials. In History we have begun to look at our own families and over the holiday Junior 1 were challenged to make a family tree, showing who is in their immediate family – some wonderfully colourful creations have already come into school ready to be put on display.

Reception

This week in Reception we have started our brand new ‘Let’s Take a Trip’ topic. We planned a journey through Kenilworth Common, deciding what we would need for our adventure, and a picnic too! We had a wonderful time exploring the woods with our friends, spotting lots of local wildlife and thinking about how we could protect our wonderful local area. In Maths, we have started to count to 20 and identify lots of different ‘teen’ numbers; it’s tricky, but we are super!

Learning In RE

In Junior 2 we explored the story of the Road to Emmaus and we role-played this event in groups.  We learnt that even though God is at work, we may have a difficult time understanding what He might be doing. We recognised that God’s big plans will come through, no matter what we can recognise immediately. Jesus revealed who He was to His disciples when they were ready and willing to comprehend.

On Tuesday after the Bank Holiday, pupils in Junior 3 will be celebrating the month of May by making rosary beads. They will learn about the different mysteries and the prayers. We will also crown the statue of Mary and say the rosary together. Later in the week pupils will have an opportunity to bake unleavened bread as part of their preparation for their own Passover Feast.

Next mass will be on Friday, 13 May 10.45am, this will be led by Junior 4R.

Joseph, Amelia and Ben are busy preparing for their Holy Communion, we hope to be able to invite the whole school to celebrate with us on Friday 27 May at St Francis.

Lego Club News

With Star Wars Day looming fast – we decided that the force was certainly with us a little earlier this year in Lego Club as we let the battle action begin with clone troopers and battle droids roaring through the atmosphere. We invented hidden wheels for creating a hover effect on our tanks, with elevating spring-loaded shooters and a lookout for a very hungry clone commander, who kept eating ice cream!!  Did you know that Lego have been recreating iconic starships, vehicles, locations and characters with Star Wars being THE most successful Lego theme ever? So inventing new battles in Lego Club makes Star Wars even more exciting. But not everyone excels in the Star Wars theme and here in Lego Club we were fully aware of this, which was why some of us celebrated spring by creating flowers and trees galore, with lots of bright green leaves to symbolise the fresh new life of spring. If you don’t feel like saying May the 4th Be With You on Star Wars Day, you can always say it with Lego flowers!
