Welcome to The Chronicle, Crackley Hall School's e-newsletter.

World Book Day has been great fun today with pupils and staff rising to the challenge of dressing up as a book character. There were lots of creative costumes as you can see in the featured photo.

It has been One World Week here in school so do read the class updates to find out what the children have been up to and don’t forget to have a look at the events section to remind yourself what is going on next week as well.

Have a lovely weekend.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

Thank you to the whole school community for their prayers, kindness and love shown towards the those who are suffering in the Ukraine.  We have all pulled together within a short time frame to show our support for the crisis and will continue to keep the momentum going with fund raising taking place next week.  As mentioned in my communication earlier this week, we have also shared various websites and resources with the staff in order to help them answer any questions that the pupils may have regarding the war in Ukraine. I am extremely grateful to the Junior 5 girls, School Council, parents and members of staff for taking the initiative and beginning the process of collecting items which will be transported to Poland at the earliest opportunity or for preparing prayer cards for the children or for arranging the cake sale.

The cake sale will take place on Tuesday 8 March and we ask that all children bring a £1 donation for their cake.  A fundraising page has been created by Mrs Burley which will also enable parents to make a further donation, should they wish, and all money raised will go directly to (DEC) The British Red Cross whish is supporting families in Ukraine.  We will all be able to track the progress of the fundraising online.

This week, the children have been able to learn first-hand about different religions as we embraced One World Week.  Visits have taken place to areas of worship including a Mosque, Gurdwara, Temple, Synagogue and our local churches.  We also were able to attend dance workshops, led by an Indian dancer and were entertained by the Pilgrim Puppets with their message of ‘The Lost Sheep’.  There has been so much for everyone to enjoy and learn, not just the children, and I would like to thank Mrs Jackson-Mayne, class teachers and the office staff who have worked hard to make this week the success that it has been.

World Book Day is always a feast for the eyes when staff and children dress up as book characters.  Today I saw outfits that I have never seen before…that includes Mr Cottrill’s costume!  Thank you to Mrs Horan and Mrs Steeples for co-ordinating events for this day and I hope the children look forward to using their book voucher.

Today was a wonderful assembly as I welcomed more children into the hall so that we could witness the superb choir perform ‘Sing’.  As I hope you will agree, if you watch the assembly recording, the children sang beautifully.  Their commitment and expert tuition from Mrs Olden is to be whole-heartedly commended.    Elsie in Junior 6 also performed an excellent solo piece in assembly.  Our Stars of the Week were: Harper, George, Royce, Josh, Ashleigh, Charlie, Oscar, Malachi, Evie, Isabelle, Arisha, Evie, George and Aaron.  Another super collection of Da Vinci Awards was presented today; this week I awarded them to Junior 6 for their efforts in mathematics, sport, English, religious education and games.   Congratulations to everyone!

I had the pleasure of making the first draw of the PTA 200 Club and the winners have been confirmed as Mr M Jones, Mrs K Haviland and Mrs J Greevy – congratulations on your win.  If you have yet to join the club and would like to raise money for the school and have an opportunity to win a prize fund, please contact our PTA.

We have welcomed a new member of staff to school this week.  Mr Hunt joins the Estates Team working with Mr Luis and will be on site every day, helping keep our beautiful school in tip top condition.  He will also be on duty at the end of the school day helping to ensure that carline and collections operate as safely and efficiently as possible.

May I take this opportunity to remind everyone that parents should please arrive at the allocated time and area for collection.  If you do park in the local residential area, please remember not to block driveways or dropped kerbs and allow safe and easy passage for other vehicles.  Vehicle engines should not be left running if waiting to collect your child.  It will undoubtedly become busier as we return to our normal assembly routine and I have therefore arranged for the school field to be open every Friday from 8.00 am to ease congestion. I would request that parents who are attending assemblies please park on our school playing fields. We have a, regularly reviewed, traffic risk assessment for the movement of vehicles onsite. The essence is that all drivers and pedestrians remain vigilant, adhere to the direction of flow and speed limit and exercise care and patience at all times. A copy of the risk assessment is available on request.

I have also written to our Nursery parents today to provide an update on staffing developments within Little Crackers Nursery. My communication can be found on the Nursery page of this newsletter.

As planned, next week we will be raising money for another charity, Mary’s Meals.  This charity has always been close to our hearts and their vision is that every child in the world should be able to receive at least one good meal every day.  I would like to thank Mrs Simmonds who has worked very hard to prepare for the Skipathon which will take place on Monday next week.  I will be able to update you further next week with a total of monies raised. Thank you very much for your contribution to this essential cause.

Online parent consultation evenings will also take place next week and I hope that you have been able to book an appointment with your child’s teacher.  If there is a need to book another appointment, please contact your child’s teacher directly to arrange a convenient time.  They will be very happy to arrange a suitable time.

Whilst Covid restrictions are now starting to be relaxed, we will continue with our enhanced cleaning in school, good ventilation, encourage adults to wear masks in crowded indoor areas for any length of time and keep meetings online wherever possible, for example.  Our ‘bubbles’ will begin to change in school, with year groups starting to share assemblies, music, drama and sports but we will endeavour to keep the pupils close to their own year group.  A number of ‘unlockdown’ measures, including being vigilant and reacting to symptoms, are being discussed at present and these will be shared with parents next week.  We will be mindful of the need for relative normality and look to balance this with due care for the vulnerable or anxious in our school community.

Thank you very much to all the pupils who have volunteered to help at Open Day tomorrow, along with the staff on duty.  The day is somewhat different to previous Open Days as visitors have had to book certain time slots and will be guided on tour by a member of staff who will ensure that our current Covid measures are followed.

I should like to thank Father Kevin for leading our Ash Wednesday Mass this week; and also, Mrs Jackson-Mayne, Mrs Olden, Mrs Simmonds and the Junior 3 staff and pupils for preparing so well for the Mass.  The pupils were outstanding in everything they did, from singing to reading and it was a most reverent occasion. We all look to the next forty days of Lent as a time to reflect on how we can be better people, we look to say ‘sorry’ for the wrongs that we have done, we look to spend more time in prayer and self-reflection and we also try to give up something or do something for others and to contribute any extra savings to a worthy cause.

I should like to wish everyone a restful and happy weekend.

God bless,

Mr Duigan

One World Week Started With A Bhang-ra

Our annual exploration of faiths from around the world started with a ‘Bhang-ra’. Thanks to the PTA, we were delighted to welcome Sohan Kailey to school on Monday 28 February to help us explore Indian Dance and Storytelling at the beginning of One World Week.

The children enjoyed learning about this traditional form of folk-dance listening to the rhythms of the Bhangra music and appreciating the storytelling, but their favourite part was definitely trying all the wonderful dance steps. The classes took turns to come down to the hall for what was an energetic session, but the pupils all had a lot of fun. The children were fabulous taking part enthusiastically and the staff even joined in too!

Learning In Action

Junior 6

This week Junior 6 have been learning all about Sikhism. We looked at where in the world Sikhism began and learnt about the founder of this religion – Guru Nanak. We found out that he was the first of ten human Gurus (meaning teacher) and that his teachings included the belief that there is only one God and that food should be distributed to all. We followed this up by looking at the other human Gurus and the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Holy Book, the last and only Guru after Guru Gobind Singh. We visited the Gurdwara in Leamington Spa and saw the Guru Granth Sahib, its location and then went to the Langar Hall for refreshments.  It was such a fantastic experience!

Junior 5

On Tuesday, Junior 5 were lucky enough to visit Birmingham Central Mosque as part of One World Week. There, we were greeted by our guide, Nasreen, who showed us the features of the outside of the mosque, including the dome and the minarets. Once inside, we spent time learning about the Islamic way of life: their beliefs, prayers, festivals and traditions. Nasreen was extremely knowledgeable and the children even got to see a copy of the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, which guides Muslims on how to live their lives.

Junior 4

Junior 4 have loved learning about Buddhism as part of One World Week, beginning on Monday with a lively session of Indian dancing in the hall. This left us all glowing and refreshed and J4R then researched and created both interesting and informative PowerPoints about Buddhism in their Computing lessons. The trip to a Buddhist Temple was the icing on the cake, and there pupils learnt even more about Buddhism, in addition to learning how to meditate. What a wonderful week for all!

Junior 3

Junior 3 excelled themselves this week as they had the honour of leading the Ash Wednesday Mass in the hall. The first time some children had all been together for a couple of years. All the children spoke beautifully with pace and meaning. We were very proud of each and every one. They were word-perfect and spoke with such dignity.

Our Egyptian topic has now come to an end and, ready for this Saturday’s Open Day, the display team have been busy working to showcase their work from the first part of the term. We think you’ll agree there are some amazing pieces to look at. Well done to all the pupils for completing a mini-project over the half-term too, on the Discovery Of the Tomb of Tutankhamun. Junior 3 have also got stuck into their new topic on ‘Rocks and Soils’ this week by sorting and comparing a wide range of different rocks. Our teachers were amazed at how many different types of rocks we already knew and how many different properties we could think of. Our favourites were definitely the smooth, shiny and expensive kind although the bubble basalt with all its tiny bubbly holes did fascinate us. We are looking forward to finding out how and why these rocks all form so differently in our next lesson.

Junior 2

Junior 2 have had such an exciting time celebrating One World Week and we have been working so hard in preparation for our visit to St Mary’s. At the beginning of the week, we learnt all about the history of Temple Balsall with the Knights Crusaders, the Knights Hospitallers, royalty and even a Lady, all contributing to the timeline of the church and manor. It was such a delight to join the children of Lady Katherine Leveson school for their church service on Thursday and everyone loved meeting Reverend Kathy, with her purple boots matching her pink hair! Kathy was a wonderful host who showed everyone around the church and then we all listened as Mr Louie rang the church bell! Our history topic has also begun this week with the ‘Great Plague of London’, much to the children’s delight as they began to learn about the gory events in London in 1665.

Junior 1

One World Week started for Junior 1 with some Indian dancing, helping to celebrate the diversity there is in the world. This was followed by a trip to St. Mary’s church in Warwick, which was fascinating with its old stained-glass windows, paintings, inscriptions and crypt underneath the church. We all learnt something new and exciting from the trip, which helped us explain the reason for stained-glass windows in our English lesson. Comparing and measuring length and height was our topic in mathematics. We also took the opportunity to use our maths in the church, comparing heights of the different statues and trying to guess how many Mr Kefalas’ would fit on top of each other to reach the highest point of the ceiling!

Reception

This week Reception have loved One World Week! We have been finding out about different cultures from around the world and the children themselves have explained how we may be different in some ways, but we are all human and equal. The children loved taking part in the Indian dancing workshop, visiting St Augustine’s church and seeing the puppet show! What a week!

Junior 3 Mass

Thank you to Junior 3 for leading a very special Ash Wednesday Mass. Father Kevin was extremely impressed with the way the pupils read and how reverent they were in helping to celebrate Mass on this special day.

Theo and Charlotte introduced the theme of the Mass, explaining that Lent is the time before Easter when we reflect on how our behaviour has an impact on others. Father Kevin asked us to be ambassadors for Christ and to try extra hard to make the right choices, make sacrifices and serve others so that people can see Christ within us.

One World Week

The whole school have been learning about different cultures and faiths in our local and global community, similar to what we have done in previous years. Pupils in every year group have visited different places of worship: Reception took a trip to St Augustine’s; Year 1 visited St Mary’s in Warwick; Junior 2 went to St Mary’s in Temple Balsall; Junior 3 to a Synagogue, as part of their work on Judaism; Junior 4 visited a Buddhist Peace Pagoda; Junior 5, the Birmingham Mosque, to link with their work on Islam and Junior 6 the Gurdwara Temple in Leamington.

All pupils had the opportunity to take part in a Bollywood Dance workshop, with Sohan Kailey, which was kindly funded by the PTA, and Nursery to Junior 3 were entertained by the Pilgrim Puppets.

It has been an exciting week and one where the children have been ambassadors for Crackley Hall. The presenters and organisers at each venue all praised the pupils for their behaviour and for asking inquisitive questions using their prior knowledge.

U9 X-Country

On Tuesday, a team of ten J4 children travelled to Twycross for an inter-school cross-country race. In extremely muddy conditions, where two of the school's minibuses had to be towed out of the quagmire, the children handled the terrain well and gave their all.  Out of nearly fifty runners in each race, the results were as follows:

Girls: Elsie A, 11th, Elora H, 14th, Alexa B, 20th, Adreena, 24th, Darcey W-S, 34th.

Boys: Patrick F, 8th, Isaac F, 9th, Tommy M, 20th, Harry B, 21st, Arthur C, 25th.

Well doen to them all.

Lego Club News

In Lego Club this week we headed for the highway with a heap of imagination and a passion for creating cool cars just bursting with awesome design details. We engineered aerodynamic bodywork, ignited removable roofs for open-top driving, added adjustable rear spoilers, affixed sporty rims with ground-gripping tyres and connected a cockpit for a minifigure to drive in – including room for legs!! You name it, we built it and designed some awesome racing cars using meticulous and precision engineering, turning our budding Lego builders into iconic master builders. We even had a race to the finish line, improvising with a chessboard for the chequered flag! Sir Lewis Hamilton – you would be proud!

Ukraine Donations

Following an initial request to J5 parents for donations to send to the Ukraine. Word quickly spread and the whole school community came together to donate clothing, bedding and towels. Along with nappies, wipes, toiletries and feminine hygiene items. Given the severity of recent days, the request extended to batteries, torches and sleeping bags.

Thursday's collection saw six vehicles full to the brim with donations. Followed by Friday's donations filling a VW transporter, a Luton Van and several cars!

The volume of generosity has been overwhelming for the Ukrainian family that started this appeal. They are truly grateful for the amazing support shown by the Crackley Community.

Thank you to everyone that has made this possible. Those that have spread the word, collected and transported the donations and of course, to everybody who sorted out items to donate and made a special trip to the shop. Let’s hope it reaches those in need quickly.
