Welcome to The Chronicle, Crackley Hall School’s e-newsletter.

It’s been Christmas fun all week here at Crackley Hall. We hope everyone enjoyed the nativities performed by Nursery, Reception and Junior 1 and Junior 2. The children certainly enjoyed performing.

Across the school, there has been lots going on, so do read on to find out what the children have been up to.

Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

This past week has been filled with hard work, tests, inter-house activities and the traditional services and nativities of the Advent Season. Though time has flown by, it's important to remember the blessings we have, especially when others may be facing various struggles. Our pupils have been so eloquent in their delivery of the Christmas message. This is the last full edition of the Chronicle this term, but I will send you a brief message next Wednesday as we begin the Christmas holidays.

As mentioned, this week has been truly amazing! We are incredibly impressed with the hard work and dedication put in by everyone to make our Nativity plays such a success. The staff and children worked tirelessly to make it all happen (to ‘perfection’) and we are most grateful for their efforts. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our parents, grandparents and families who came out in large numbers to watch and support us. As the week draws to a close, we are all filled with excitement and anticipation for Christmas.

On Wednesday, Mrs Brew and her catering team produced a most delicious Christmas lunch for the whole school, one of the tastiest ever! The lunch was enjoyed by staff and pupils alike, bringing everyone together in a joyous and festive occasion. I was blessed to share the experience with Father Kevin and Father David, making it all the more special. We also welcomed to lunch Mr Alex Darkes, Foundation Assistant Head. Mr Darkes was instrumental in the building of the two extensions to Crackley Hall in the last 12 years.

We had a fantastic display of Christmas jumpers in school on Wednesday, with no duplicates this year. All pupils and staff wore Christmas jumpers to support the ‘Save the Children’ charity. A guest speaker, Monique Morris, who is also a volunteer for Save the Children, explained to the children the significance of this charity. Over 100 years ago, the founder of the charity, Eglantyne Jebb, responded to the suffering of children during the war and declared that every child has rights - the right to education, to be healthy, and to be protected and safe. Mrs Morris helped the children understand how their donation would help children living in remote villages worldwide. It was inspiring to know that a Crackley Hall pupil's Great, Great Grandfather, Captain George Gracey, was the General Secretary of the Save the Children fund in the 1930s and 1940s, and he received a letter from Princess Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, who later became the Queen, acknowledging his charity work on behalf of the organization. Thank you to all the children and staff who participated in this charitable event. Thank you to all who donated. We will announce the final amount raised, soon.

Please bear in mind that the wellbeing of your child is of utmost importance to us. If your child has been unwell or has been diagnosed with an infection, kindly ensure that they only come back to school once their temperature can be controlled without medication.

We are thrilled to welcome two new members of staff, Miss Charlotte Paynter and Miss Tamika Jonah, to Little Crackers Nursery. Miss Jonah returns to work at her former junior school and her younger brother finished in Junior 6 last year. Miss Paynter is also local to the area and has been very involved in serving in her local community. We hope that they will both enjoy their time as part of our fabulous Nursery and Crackley Hall team.

The PTA has several unclaimed prizes that are still waiting to be collected. To make things easier, the ladies at the front office have decided to store them there from Monday to Wednesday for collection. If you happen to be one of the lucky winners, please collect your Prize before Wednesday.

There were many awards certificates and announcements to be made today.  Our Stars of the Week were presented to Nursery - Leonardo and George; Reception - Giulio and Edward; J1 - Anas and Yuvraaj; J2 - Toby and Tommy; J3 – Ashleigh and the whole of J3V; J4 – Niamh and Casper; J5 - Harriet Charlotte; and J6 Elora and Elsie.  Congratulations to you all for your super hard work.

Well done to everyone who was awarded their Da Vinci certificates or their Crackley Compass bronze stars. A special ‘thank you’ and congratulations to our troupe of J6 reindeer (and Santa) who entertained us at this morning’s assembly.

Special mention must be made of Elsie A (J6) on being selected as part of the Severn Stars netball training programme. This is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. Chace W (J3) has won the Catholic Independent Schools’ Association Christmas card competition (Junior division). He is a wonderful artist, and we commend him on this outstanding achievement.

Ours sports teams have done extremely well over the course of the term. Well done to all of them and to the coaching staff for their time and expertise. Some year groups play a lot more than others, but we try to ensure that we arrange as many fixtures as possible. Whilst allowing time to practise.

I would like to wish everyone a restful and happy weekend.

God bless
Rob Duigan

Junior 2 Performed Hooray In A Manger

Junior 2 performed their joyful nativity to a packed school hall of parents on Friday 15 December. The traditional story brought to life beautifully in a celebration of dance and song.

Mary and Joseph and a host of travellers are all on the move, making their way towards Bethlehem. The three wise men with their camels, the angels, shepherds and their sheep are all keen to get in on the action too. As the story unfolds, all are delighted with the wonder of the nativity.

It was a fabulous performance from all the children who delivered their lines with panache and sang exuberantly and enthusiastically.

A huge well done to Junior 2.

Stable By Starlight Was A Sparkling Spectacle

Reception and Junior 1 put on a sparkling display for their Nativity this year, when they performed Stable by Starlight.

In Bethlehem, a stable stood peacefully in the darkness. It was a night like any other, but everything was about to change. Mary and Joseph take shelter there and before they know it, the humble stable is bathed in starlight and they are joined by a newborn baby, angels, shepherds and three kings.

Our youngest children danced and sang their hearts out while telling the traditional story of the birth of Jesus. After all their hard work rehearsing, learning the songs and memorising their lines, what a spectacle it proved to be. We hope you all enjoyed their brilliant performance.

A Lovely Little Nursery Nativity

Our very youngest children took to the stage on Thursday 14 December to tell the story of the nativity. With smiles on their faces, they sang the super catchy songs beautifully and delighted in asking ‘What happened next?’ as the story unfolds.

Performing on stage to a large audience of excited parents takes more than a little courage, but our Nursery animals, innkeepers, stars, angels, shepherds, wise men, Mary, Joseph and the donkey were all magnificent.

There were lots of magical moments and a few memorable mishaps, baby Jesus is absolutely fine after his tumble to the floor!

A huge well done to nursery - you were all amazing!

Lego Sleigh Competition Winner Announced

Congratulations to William H who was chosen as the overall winner of the Lego Sleigh Competition. Runners up were Hugo in second place and William C in third place.

Many thanks to our judges, Eugenia Latham, a physicist who works for JLR doing models of physics of failure for the reliability study of advanced powertrain systems. Andy Cowell a British Formula One engineer and recently the Managing Director at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, and David Johnson, TA and Aftercare Manager at Crackley Hall, who studied Product Design and has a Batchelor of Arts and Master of Arts qualification.

Will's amazing techincal design wowed the judges as he had thought of many technical improvements to Santa's sleigh, including emergency back-up options! Hugo's design was a very creative idea with Santa's sleigh being pulled by an aeroplane. Mrs Latham commented on how original it was as it was not limited by snow and could reach everyone all over the world. William C's was also a very creative design with an evacuation exit for Santa and very thoughtful interiors for Santa's comfort.

Other designs were a beautiful caravan which was thought out carefully for the animals comfort and another design that enabled the sleigh to land in Venice which was indeed an engineering feat!

Well done to everyone who competed!

House Christmas Carol Sing Off

For their latest inter House competition, Mr Vaughan challenged the school houses to a Christmas Carol sing-off. On Tuesday morning, in the hall, before the dress rehearsal for Reception and Junior 1’s nativity, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and Venus took it in turns to perform three Carols. Led by their House Captains the children did not disappoint, with spirited renditions of Once in Royal David’s City, Away in A Manger and Love Shone Down. A super huge well done to everyone involved, Mr Vaughan had a very hard decision to make indeed. After much deliberation on the performance across all of the carols, the results were as follows: 1st Venus, 2nd Mars, 3rd Jupiter and 4th Saturn.

You can watch a clip of the singing here.

Crackley Welcomes Save The Children Speaker

To explain the meaning of why we were wearing Christmas Jumpers on Wednesday, we welcomed a guest speaker who spoke to pupils about Save The Children.

Monique Morris, who is a volunteer for the charity, explained to the children how, over 100 years ago, the founder of the charity, a courageous women called Eglantyne Jebb, responded to the terrible suffering children were facing, declaring that all children should have rights.  The right to go to school, to be healthy and to be protected and safe. Mrs Morris helped pupils comprehend how much their donation would help other children who lived in remote villages throughout the world - how £2 could buy 12 special food sachets to help children grow; a midwife kit; purification tablets; a school bag and two goats.

We discovered that Elliott in Junior 2, had a Great Great Grandfather called Captain George Gracey, and in the 1930s and 1940s, he devoted himself to the work of helping children all over the world as the General Secretary of the Save the Children fund.

Thank you to everyone for their generous donations on Christmas Jumper Day, they will be passed on to Save The Children.

Learning In Action

Junior 6

This week Junior 6 have started their new cross topic focus about the sinking of the Titanic. In both History and English, the children have been thinking about what life would have been like aboard the Titanic and the events leading up to its historic sinking. Using their research skills, the children were tasked with researching the key events of this catastrophe and making up their own minds about who they believed were the main culprits. The children took to this task with fantastic enthusiasm and produced some super ideas. We have also heard some brilliant presentations from the trenches research task. Well done children, you’ve all worked so hard this week.

Junior 5

As we are in the season of Advent, Junior 5 have been preparing for the true meaning of Christmas. Junior 5L have decorated the tree and brought in their gifts for the class Secret Santa. In RE, they have created Bambinellis, which will be presented at the Advent mass, next week. Junior 5 have been learning about Advent through assemblies and their RE lessons. They have investigated the symbolism of the Advent wreath - history, shape, candles and evergreens - considering the direct links between the traditional wreath and the everlasting love that God has for each one of us.

Junior 5 have learnt about The Annunciation of John the Baptist; and the children have written an empathetic first-person account, as Zechariah, of this key event in preparing the way for the Lord. Finally, this week, the children created a Birth Announcement for John's birth. We look ahead to Gaudete Sunday, when the rose candle (Joy) will be lit as we reach the mid-point of Advent.

Junior 4

Junior 4 have been very busy this week practising for their first school visit to Young Voices, which will be at the Resorts World Arena on Friday 12 January. We have been practising all the songs and dance moves and we are so excited to sing our hearts out at this world famous event. In RE we have been putting the finishing touches to our bambinellis in time for the Advent mass next week and we have been learning about the Jesse Tree and how it represents the family tree of Jesus during the Advent period. Each ornament represents a story from the Bible that tells us about the ancestors of Jesus before He was born. With Christmas Jumper Day on the same day as our Christmas dinner, we all got into the festive mood whilst planning for our class Christmas party to celebrate our first term in Junior 4 together.

Junior 3

As we move further into advent, it is feeling more and more festive in Junior 3. Last week saw the arrival of the class elves and a flurry of excitement every morning to see what mischief they have been up to. We have also been thinking of others as we fill our reverse advent hamper with treats to donate to those in need this Christmas. We have all been very excited to start planning our own stories this week, based on adapting our class story of Lila and the Secret of Rain. Our stories are all about a very different problem which involves not enough sunshine here in Kenilworth – a problem we can all relate to at this time of year.

In Art and DT, we have been busily putting the finishing touches to our djembe drums and they are starting to look very festive too. We hope they will be ready to take home before the end of term. More festive activities are planned for next week and we are all looking forward to a special class party to celebrate a wonderful term together.

Junior 2

All the children in Junior 2 have been busy getting into the Christmas spirit this week. Miss Rogers, Mrs Burley, Mrs Bhogal and Mrs Steeples are so proud of Year 2 for their performances in the Nativity; the children worked hard to learn the lines, and songs and blew us away with how well they delivered all their lines. Next week we are looking forward to decorating cookies, and exchanging Secret Santas.

All the Junior 2 team would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and we can’t wait to see you all in the New Year.

Junior 1

Junior 1 have had the most incredible festive week as we approached the end of our first term. On Monday we all went to see The Gruffalo at Warwick Arts Centre. The children accompanied the little mouse as she went in search of a special nut whilst avoiding being eaten by various woodland animals. Everyone was in fine voice for the audience participation - with the show providing songs, laughs and ‘monstrous’ fun, it really was such a wonderful way to spend our afternoon. We think it is possibly the best show we have ever seen at the Arts Centre.

Wednesday saw us all donning our Christmas jumpers as well as a special Crackley Christmas dinner for lunch. The week ended as it began with the excitement of our very own Nativity show Stable by Starlight and we hope you will agree, it was a resounding success. Well done to Junior 1 for all your hard work in rehearsals over the last few weeks whilst still covering all our curriculum expectations. You all definitely deserve a rest!

Reception

What a busy week we have had in Reception, from the dress rehearsal to the final Nativity performance – Christmas Jumper day and Christmas lunch, even house competitions in PE, everyone is getting super excited, and just a little bit tired!  We have been so impressed with our classes this week. The children have been continuing with our phonics learning journey and taking this busy period in their stride. We were super impressed with everyone on Thursday afternoon, congratulations to everyone for a fabulous performance!

From all of us in the Reception Team, we hope you all have a very Happy Christmas and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Nursery

Nursery enjoyed a tremendous start to the week, with a trip to watch The Gruffalo at the Warwick Arts Centre. Both children and staff were utterly mesmerised by this outstanding performance from the ‘Tall Stories’ theatre company. The children were wide-eyed and delighted to join in with the story, in pantomine style. As a cohort, Nursery must be commended because they behaved impeccably during the outing, and all clearly enjoyed travelling on the ‘great, big coach’ to the venue.

Our Little Crackers then experienced their very own moment of fame, joining in with repeated refrains and performing songs to our Nursery Christmas production, A Little Nativity. It has been heart-warming to see such effort to learn the words, and we thank parents for supporting us with practise at home, which helped the children’s confidence on stage.

Christmas Jumper Day and Christmas lunch have also added to our seasonal celebrations and ensured that this busy week has certainly been full of festive cheer.

During Phonics, this week’s traditional tale has been Jack and the Beanstalk, which prompted spin-off discussion about whether Jack should have taken the giant’s belongings or whether he could have found a different way to solve his problem!

We lit our third candle on the Advent wreath and the children were able to suggest lots of thoughtful ways in which we could get our hearts ready to celebrate Jesus’s birthday on Christmas day. The third candle signifies ‘Joy’ and this word certainly sums up our week in Nursery!

Monday Mission Assembly

Mrs Glen-Roots led the Monday Mission assembly when we lit the second Advent candle - the candle of Peace. We were given the opportunity to reflect on peace in our lives and within the wider world. Just as John the Baptist prepared all those years ago by encouraging people to get baptised and ready for Jesus, we too can get our hearts and ourselves ready by being kind and sharing love. Mrs Glen-Roots explained the meaning of the word Peace - as having no conflict and having harmony and tranquility. We then listened to a story about the 'Enchanted Grove,' whereby creatures and animals in the forest shared their traditions and kindness with travellers passing through. Despite differences, they all realised that peace could be present in understanding and accepting others and building on each other's strengths. Pupils then displayed posters of words to help us understand harmony. These words included Diversity - we should accept all individual people; Understanding - everyone should be accepted and understood for their beliefs; Community - despite differences, we can all live together; Connection - we can all find a connection with each other; Nature is a teacher and we can learn so much from the animals who naturally work together.

To signify the ripple effect of peace, we all made a peace wave around the hall to highlight how we are all peacemakers in our school and beyond.

Sewing Club

During this term in Sewing Club, Junior 3 pupils have been hard at work making various Christmas decorations from felt, to hang on their Christmas trees at home. Some of the decorations that they have made included Christmas stockings, Christmas trees decorated with buttons for baubles, bells and a gingerbread person. The children have enjoyed learning how to perfect their running stitch, the over stitch as well as how to sew on buttons.

Well done to everyone your decorations are amazing.

Please remember to sign up for Sewing Club next term!

Lego Club

Did you know that Lego bricks were actually discussed at the COP28 summit in Dubai this week?! Why? Because a few years ago Lego committed to making its bricks not directly from oil, but from old plastic bottles. Lego did this but, ironically, the process took more energy to turn these recycled bottles into bricks than it did to take oil and turn it into bricks. Answers on a postcard please!

We all know that a small brick can make a big difference and in Lego Club this week, we grabbed our bricks and built our own Christmas stars. From small stars, big stars, wonderfully weird stars – every size and shape of a star -  it was just awesome. We also created our own Lego certificates and finished off with a festive Advent calendar raffle surprise, with the winner of the Lego Sleigh competition being given the opportunity to open the Christmas Eve window!  Happy building and Happy Christmas Lego everyone!

School Drop Off And Collection Arrangements

When dropping off in the morning, if you are using carline, please move round the roundabout before dropping off and do not leave your car unattended. Carline can cause traffic issues on the Kenilworth Road, so please be mindful.

If you are dropping off and wish to walk your child up to the school or are coming into school please use the Lower Playground or the Sports Field. Please remember to park considerately as parking is at a premium.

We would ask that if you use the lower playground at morning drop off, that you leave the school site promptly, as parking is at a premium, and it has been causing traffic congestion.

Please do not park on the Grasscrete Parking area or on the left hand side when you enter the school main carline, as these are both staff parking areas.

Where possible, please avoid parking on the local residential roads, and if you do, please park considerately and legally.

When collecting in the afternoon, please adhere to the collection times, as if you arrive too early, this causes traffic congestion. If you are early, we would suggest parking on the Sports Field and walking up to school.

If someone other than yourself is collecting your child, please ensure you have notified the School Office by email/telephone no later than lunchtime that day. If you would like alternative collection arrangements to be permanent, please can you notify the School Office by email.

If you are unsure or wish to clarify any points, please call the School Office.
