Dear Parents

Welcome to this week’s Chronicle and news of another busy week in school.

On Monday the whole school started activities as part of National Maths Week and has been expertly co-ordinated by Mrs van Zyl. This national initiative has provided young people exciting opportunities to focus on exciting mathematics exercises as well as engendering a positive image of mathematics.  You will be able to read more about the challenges, games and activities later in this edition.

Yesterday Mrs Vaughan and Mrs Horan accompanied our Under 11 girls’ hockey team to London to compete in the ISA National Hockey competition at the Lee Valley Stadium.  The team fared very well, winning their group and progressing to the playoffs.   Mrs Vaughan was also very proud of our team of 12 swimmers who attended the ISA Swimming Gala last week.  More details of the day are reported later in this edition but my congratulations are extended to Issy, Elora, Jenson, Esme, Charlie, Jack, Sebastian, Matilda, Leo and Elsie for finishing in podium places in their events.

Following the Princethorpe College entrance examination, Junior 6 have been enjoying an amended timetable organised by Mrs Horan and Mrs Vaughan.  I have been able to join the children for some of these activities and have been most impressed by the artistic Bake Off entries and the concentration during the heart dissection.

Thank you to the children who submitted a Christmas card for the CISC competition, entries have now been posted and will also be considered for our school Christmas card.  I will announce the winner in a future edition of the Chronicle.  Our PTA are busy planning a Christmas fayre for the children to enjoy in school so please keep a look out for more details about this.

Yesterday we held a poignant assembly to mark Remembrance Day.  Thankfully the weather held and pupils and staff gathered outside to observe the two-minute silence.  I would like to thank the School Council and Mrs Burley for co-ordinating the selling of poppies this week and Mr Luis for helping our Reception class understand more about why we wear poppies.  Thank you, also, to Isabella and Theo, Agnes and Merryn and Mrs Jackson-Mayne and Mr Luis for assisting in the memorial service yesterday.

I hope you were able to enjoy today’s assembly together with Arthur’s violin performance and the ISA football match report. Our Stars of the Week were: Jack, Bella, Ted, Xanthe, Remy, Alfie, Theo, Harrison, Elsie, Ivy, Penny, Jakob, Harry and Elle.  I also ‘presented’ an incredible 35 Junior da Vinci’s.  I am most proud of all of you for your super efforts - well done! 

There have been some changes to the arrangements for Advent which have been communicated this week.  Calendar changes can often be outside our control and whilst we try to seek alternative solutions, it may be inevitable that sports fixtures, trips or events need to be changed.  Unfortunately, we have recently received confirmation that we will not be able to continue with Junior 3 and 4 swimming lessons after January due to Abbey Fields Leisure Centre closing for a major refurbishment.  Although we cannot use the swimming pool during the rest of this academic year, we will endeavour to seek an alternative provision that will fit with the academic timetable or will arrange for extra sports sessions for Junior 3 and 4.

I hope to see as many of you as possible this evening at the Headmaster’s Quiz.  This is again being held online and worked exceptionally well last year.  My thanks are extended to the PTA, particularly Mr Card, who will be the host tonight.  There will be plenty of opportunity to win house points and I hope that the children will join in for the school round where I will quiz them on their knowledge of school.

We are sad to be bidding farewell to two members of staff at the end of the term. Madame Tatton, our French teacher who works part-time at Crackley Hall, is leaving for a full-time teaching post much closer to her home. She has made such a positive difference to our French at school, and I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to Madame Tatton for all that she has done for the pupils at Crackley Hall.  I am delighted to say that we have appointed Mrs Sarah Westerman to the post of part-time French teacher.  She is an experienced and very well qualified teacher, and we are very excited about her joining us in January.

Mrs Convey, one of our Reception teachers is also, very sadly, having to leave us in January. She has a long-standing association with the school, previously working as a teaching assistant and, a few years prior to that, attending St Joseph’s as a pupil.  I should like to extend my huge gratitude and appreciation for all that Mrs Convey has done, for her camaraderie and her total devotion to the school and pupils.  We are most fortunate to have appointed an outstanding, very warm and well-experienced teacher as our new Reception Teacher and I look forward to welcoming Mrs Milly Allen to Crackley Hall in January.  Mrs Allen has already met the pupils, begun her planning and comprehensive handover and will be hoping to meet her Reception class parents next week.

My best wishes will accompany Madame Tatton and Mrs Convey for the future.

I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and please don’t forget Odd Sock Day on Monday.  This will focus on anti-bullying.

Congratulations to them all!

A huge congratulations to Evelyn in J3 who has completed her first Crackley Compass chart before anyone else.  We are very proud of you!  You have shown that you are Curious, Responsible, Active, Collaborative, Kind, Learning and Enthusiastic.  You are certainly making a difference. 

On Thursday 11 November, Crackley Hall School gathered together outside on the playground for our Remembrance Service. At 11.00am Isabella Olden played the Last Post on her cornet and the children and staff observed the two-minute silence. Theo Cowlishaw then sounded the Reveille. Headmaster, Mr Duigan read an extract from the poem For The Fallen before the service ended with a prayer.

Two Crackley Hall pupils, Junior 6, Issey and Junior 4, Elora have qualified for the Independent Schools Association’s National Swimming Championships after success at the ISA Midlands Regional Gala. The girls will now swim for the Midlands team at the national finals at the London Aquatics Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, on Sunday 28 November.

A team of 12 swimmers from Crackley Hall School made the journey to Walsall Gala Baths on Thursday 4 November to compete in the ISA Swimming Gala. Organised by Crackley Hall School, and welcoming children from 20 schools from across the region, the children from Junior 4, Junior 5 and Junior 6 swam 25m races in the pool in the breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle.

For some of the children, it was their very first experience of competitive galas, whilst for others, it was all about times and positions, but for all of Crackley Hall’s pupils it was about encouraging each other, right from the start through to the finish of every race.

Overall team Crackley finished in second place with the Girls team also finishing in second place and the boys team coming fourth overall, very creditable results for the school. Crackley Hall was delighted that between them Issy and Elora qualified for four events. Issey will swim in the Year 6 breaststroke individual, freestyle relay and medley relay while Elora will swim in the Year 4 freestyle relay.

Crackley Hall PE teacher, Mrs Kat Vaughan, was delighted and commented, “There was a fabulous atmosphere poolside with the whole team willing each other on. There were some excellent swims and tight finishes, all going to show that Crackley has some very determined children. It was fantastic to be back taking part in competitions. The children were exceptionally well-behaved, and I was very proud to say that they were from Crackley Hall. It really is marvellous that this year once again we have children qualifying for the prestigious National competition in London.”

This week Junior 6 have been enjoying a week of curriculum enrichment activities.  Today the classes had their annual 'bake off' competition and what super creative skills were on show. Cakes were decorated in fabulous styles, ranging from volcanoes and football pitches, to a Minion, tractor and even the Titanic. The attention to detail and ingenuity were a sight to behold.

As is tradition, Mr Duigan came up to class to judge the entries and he was very impressed. Congratulations to the winners and to those who received an honourable mention and to all the children who took part so enthusiastically.

This year’s winners were 1st Alex and Henry, 2nd Mya and 3rd Alfred and Aaron. Honourable mentions went to Holly and Ellie, Dillon and Summer and Willow.

Alex and Henry's winning design was a Jammie Dodger biscuit cake - a very original idea put together carefully by the boys.

This week Crackley Hall joined over a million other pupils across the country celebrating ‘Maths Week England’, a grassroots movement that aims to share the joy of mathematics with everyone. The vision is to provide young people in England with a positive image of mathematics, and to contribute in a small way to changing the national attitude towards this vital and beautiful subject.

All year groups at Crackley have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the mathematics that we see all around us and use every day: from STEM challenges and engineering, the mathematics of art and design, to puzzles and games like sudoku and chess, there really has been something for everyone!

Reception classes thoroughly enjoyed being shape detectives and going on a shape hunt around school! We spotted circles and triangles in lots of different places and discussed how many sides they have.

Junior 1 enjoyed listening to some mathematical stories and thinking hard about the ‘maths’ hidden within them.  After hearing the Spinderella story, they played a game called Incey Wincey Spider. This involved two people rolling a die and moving either up or down a drainpipe to see who would come out first! It was a lot of fun and we all enjoyed playing a few games of it.

Junior 2 have been exploring the important mathematical matter of finance and thinking carefully about what we save our money for. They created their own amazing moneyboxes decorated with all the things they are saving for. Please see the separate article on the moneybox design competition if you would also like to join in.

Junior 3 enjoyed an online mathematical story time session from Roma Agrawal, with activities based on her book How Was That Built? which looks at the mathematics involved in engineering and architecture. They then completed their own ‘Strength of Columns’ investigation and had great fun drawing ‘The Shard’ out of lots of triangles – a very strong and stable shape.

Junior 4 explored patterns in the times tables and created some wonderful multiplication art.

Junior 5 explored horizontal symmetry and loved thinking and testing to check for any words which have symmetry, like BOB. They have also been talking about the importance of saving their money by recording what they would like to save for. The process of making their own money boxes helped them explore the properties of a cube and what a ‘net’ is. They had to think hard about which faces would be on the bottom and the side of their boxes. The discussions about this have been endless!

Junior 6 have explored maths through an engineering theme, understanding the strength of 3D shapes and how they are used in construction. Next week, they are taking part in a mathematical ‘Escape the Room’ challenge; we hope their problem-solving skills are up to the task or we might not see them for a while!

All in all, a wonderful week of mathematical activities, challenges, stories, and games was had by all.

During November, Crackley Hall School reflects on the theme of Remembrance. The month is the last in the Church’s calendar and commemorates all those who have departed from life. It begins with the Feast of All Saints, a tribute to the saints, and is followed by the Feast of All Souls, when we pray for those who have died, particularly our loved ones.

In their classrooms and lessons pupils are also considering Remembrance, the legacies of war and why we commemorate those who fought and served in the World Wars, and in recent conflicts, and the sacrifices they made.

The children have made many wonderful creative contributions to our poppy display, and they are now on display in the reception area. The poppy is our society’s symbol of collective remembrance and the symbol of all our hopes for a peaceful future.

This week the School Council have also been busy selling poppy products on behalf of the Royal British Legion. 

The children have impressed us all with their thoughful responses as we have together reflected on the bravery and the selfless sacrifice made by so many of our country's service men and women.

The children in Reception have been exploring Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering all those who have given their lives to enable us to live in peace today. Mr Luis from the Estates team visited the classes on Tuesday to talk about his time at the British military base Camp Bastion in Afghanistan. Mr Luis showed the children his impressive medals and his dog tag and shared photos from his time working in logistics at the base. He also introduced the children to Hero, a very special teddy bear, given to Mr Luis by his family, who had accompanied Mr Luis to Afghanistan. The children listened attentively and thoroughly enjoyed quizzing Mr Luis on his military service with the RAF, they also enjoyed learning how to stand to attention and to do a proper salute. The session helped the children to understand why we wear poppies and that Remembrance Day is important for us all today.

Crackley Hall School, Junior 5 pupil, Isabella performed with the English Symphony Youth Orchestra in a concert at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern on Sunday 31 October.

9-year-old Isabella, who is a talented trumpet player, performed alongside over 100 young people aged 6 to 18 years, at grades 0 to 8, playing two challenging pieces, Holst’s Mars and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture.

To prepare for the performance Isabella had attended a two-day workshop at Bromsgrove School where she worked in the Intermediate group, Grades 4-7, with musicians many much older than herself.

Isabelle explained, “It was an amazing experience and I really enjoyed it. The course helped me to play better as the pieces were difficult and it was hard to sustain the high notes.” She continued, “I made friends and if you like playing the courses are really great to do.”

A huge well done to Isabella, what a great experience for her!

Calling all mathematicians and economists! Here is a chance to think hard about creative ways to save money and what you are saving for, whilst having fun.

Design, draw, colour, then make yourself a moneybox, using the attached template. Take a photo of your moneybox and bring it into school to your form teacher. The moneyboxes will be judged in school and a creative da Vinci awarded to the most inventive.

The top three will then be entered into the national competition, run by the ‘Lifesavers Financial Literacy’ programme. Please bring your entry and photo into school by Wednesday 24 November.

Could the children all wear odd socks on Monday 15 November please as we will taking part in Odd Socks Day as part of Anti-Bullying Week.

Odd Socks Day celebrates that we are all unique, and the day sends an important message to all pupils that they should be allowed to be themselves,  free from bullying, and helps us celebrate Anti-Bullying Week in a fun and positive way. 

Last year over 13,000 schools took part in Odd Socks Day and once again Andy Day (Cbeebies/CBBC) and his band Andy and the Odd Socks are supporting the Anti-Bullying Alliance to help bring Odd Socks Day to life again this year. Have a listen to the brilliant song they have recorded especially for Anti-Bullying Week, One Kind Word.

Well done all!

During the half term break Patrick (J4R) visited his grandparents in the Hunsrück which is in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, the area is very rural and close to the Northern continental border of the Roman Empire. Patrick took this visit by chance and enjoyed exploring the Roman roads in the area which are described in a poem by a Roman poet Ausonius. A major military road crossed this country side which is still visible (or in use in places) and can still be hiked (or driven) along.

Patrick has learned through local historical sites just how many hundred of thousands of kilometres of Roman roads stretch from the north of England to the Middle East.

It was a fascinating History lesson for Patrick that we enjoyed hearing about.

This is an opportunity to gain an insight into the Early Years at Crackley Hall and Little Crackers.  Parents will be able to visit the Nursery and Reception classes, see examples of children's work and activities and talk to the Headmaster, Rob Duigan, and Assistant Head Early Years and Key Stage 1, Susan Glen-Roots and meet members of the Nursery and Reception Team.

This week, Junior 6 have been enjoying some well-earned alternative activities after their exams last Saturday. Some of the highlights have been the games on the sports field on Monday, where the children learned some very different hockey skills and commando crawled through the mud, making sure they also caught the flying eggs!  On Wednesday they became experts in all things heart related as they dissected lamb hearts and explored the structure of the heart. They also had the opportunity to observe an eyeball dissection and learn about the optic nerve, the retina and the lens. What superb fun!

Junior 5 have had a lot to celebrate this week. The children continued to work hard in their lessons and we have enjoyed spending time completing puzzles and activities for Maths Week England. Today we ate a treat of a doughnut, popcorn or apple, thanks to our PTA. We are simply enjoying life! Some J5L pupils kept themselves busy during half-term, designing and creating a planets project. Our Space Investigators have clearly worked their socks off to make their displays; they are stunning, and we are very proud of them.

Pick it! Boil it! Taste it! This week has been filled with persuasive language and the children have enjoyed using emotive language, rhetorical questions and many other persuasive features, to create their very own tea boxes. They all produced some wonderful work, with ambitious vocabulary in abundance. We have also been learning to read and write in French. So far we have studied how to introduce ourselves, giving our names and ages, and greeting people appropriately at different times of the day. This week we focused on the skill of reading and putting together a jigsaw puzzle by matching French and English sentences.  Excellents enfants!

Junior 3 have had such a busy week and all the children have worked incredibly hard, finding new skills in maths – arrays and repeated addition work that will help us as we move through the syllabus. Mahnoor even managed to bring in some birthday mini-cakes arranged as an array. Maths has never been so delicious!

In other areas, pupils have been investigating and analysing African musical instruments as part of our Kenyan topic. We have found out about the materials used and the sounds made by the different percussion instruments and are now at the stage where we are making our own in Design Technology. Pupils learned today how to create the basic design and are beginning to use a ‘papier-mache’ technique.

All-in-all a very busy week, with our minds on ‘Remembrance, Reconciliation’ and the Famous Five!

Junior 2 have clearly enjoyed all of their lessons this week and there has been a real buzz of activity in the classrooms. Everyone has been working on their independence in our Maths lessons, accessing lots of different resources to find the answers to addition and subtraction calculations using the column method. There is always so much to remember, so we learnt how important it is to break the stages down! This week, we have embedded our understanding, so that everyone is able to swap tens for ones and show this in their books. This week we have also learnt about the importance of Remembrance Sunday. We learnt why the poppy is so significant and why it is still important today. In Geography we have been looking at the town of Marazion in Cornwall, learning all about what geographical landmarks are there. We also learnt what a ‘key’ is and added our own to the map of the town. Next week we are hoping to visit Kenilworth in readiness for our comparison study.

We had some wonderful poppies made for Remembrance Day, some in our Art lessons and some very creative ones at home. We took time to think about why we wear poppies and the significance of them at different times during the week. In Forest School we respectfully stopped for the two-minute silence. In PE we had a go at various yoga poses and stretches – some were easier that others and some took a lot of balance and skill! In Maths we helped to celebrate Maths Week England by listening to the daily mathematical stories and after hearing Spinderella, we played a game called Incey Wincey spider with a partner, a counter and a die, to see who could get out of the drainpipe first!

Reception have had a lovely week learning about Remembrance Day. We learnt that many people wear poppies as a reminder of those soldiers, sailors, and members of the RAF, amongst others, who gave their lives to help us live in a more peaceful world. Mr Luis, our Caretaker here at Crackley Hall, visited us and explained his important work in the services, and we loved making split pin poppies too. In Maths we have been investigating circles and triangles and enjoyed taking part in Maths Week England – ask us about our shape hunt around school, we were super ‘shape detectives’!

Make a Christmas Bauble to raise awareness of the 'Heads Together' charity to support Mental Health of children

Your task is to find out about the charity 'Heads Together' led by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, then make a Christmas bauble for the Christmas tree which will be entered into the annual Christmas Tree competition at St Nicholas church at the Kenilworth Light Switch On.

Mrs Jackson-Mayne is imagining an amazing array of colouful 'head shaped' baubles that show different emotions.

The final date for entries is Tuesday 22 November.

People are invited to visit the church on Friday 26 November and vote for the best decorated tree.

All the proceeds this year go towards the The Kenilworth Centre for the Youth Wellbeing Fund which links with our theme

Each week Mrs Jackson-Mayne leads a ‘Prayer and Meditation’ workshop with a class.

The next Mass, which is on the theme of Vocations will be celebrated by Father Kevin on Friday 19 November with Junior 4. For many of the children, it will be their first Mass this year. We all look forward to pressing pause in our busy timetable to think about what is important in our lives and our aims and goals for the future.

In J2 RE this week the children discussed the timeline of Jesus.  We all recognised lots of different events in the life of Jesus and we were able to think about where each episode would go on a timeline of Jesus’ life.  Starting with the Annunciation and the Visitation, we discussed each event together and then sequenced the pictures.  Some children wanted to add to the timeline and remembered what happened on Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday.  It was wonderful to see how much the children could recall and what they actually remembered.   We also made our own Rosary beads and learnt how the different prayers are said on the Rosary and why.  We also looked at the four Mysteries – Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious.  We hope you like our unique creations!

Whilst exploring the parable of the ‘Lost Sheep’ in their RE lesson, Junior 3H had to first find all the 50 sheep that Mrs JM had hidden. Then using their number sequencing knowledge, they had to find the most efficient method to find out which sheep was missing.

Weekly Mission

On Monday, we took a team of eight Junior 6 boys to Kidderminster to play in the Midlands ISA Football Tournament, with the incentive that if they could finish in the top four, they would qualify for the national finals, due to be played at St George’s Park, England’s national training centre. The morning schedule was tough, with quick-fire games coming every 10 minutes. Despite the challenging fixture list, each and every one of the boys played excellently, which resulted in five wins from five games and finishing first in their group.

As a result, Crackley played the second round of fixtures against all of the other group winners, yet another challenging set of fixtures. Despite losing their first game in the second round, the whole team showed exemplary determination and a high level of skill, winning their remaining games and ending as tournament runners-up. They were all then delighted to hear the news, that they had qualified to play at the national finals! Well done Leo, Dexter, George, Henry, Sid, Ollie, Jack and Leonardo.

Also a huge well done to Dixie Grammar for winning the event and thank you to all the organisers for providing the children with a wonderful competitive opportunity.

Our U10 A and B teams travelled to Spratton Hall School for a Hockey Sevens away fixture on Wednesday 10 November.

All the girls played with determination and displayed great team spirit and the scores didn’t reflect the play on the day.

The U10A team continue to make significant improvements and despite coming up against an unbeaten Spratton Hall team, they put in a strong performance. In their first match, they lost 4-1 but in their second match, their improved confidence resulted in a narrow 3-2 defeat. 

The B Team had much more possession in their match and just needed a little more luck to get the goals in.

It was a really excellent effort from all the girls.  

Playing for the A team were: Esme, Suzie, Nell, Julia, Olivia, Georgie, Penny and Chloe.

Playing for the B team were: Matilda, Emily, Sofi, Kate, Amalia, Jia, Jessica, Mairen and Grace.

Space explorers were in abundance in Lego Club this week and with house points up for grabs, the challenge of stretching creativity and using detailed building skills made the assignments even more exciting! Adventures began with a space explorer having its very own cockpit, living area, a working crane arm and suspension, plus a small robot with moving arms to help the intrepid astronauts do their thing! With caring for our planet always in our mind-set, we even made an electric car to embark on open road moondust fun whilst roaming amongst the moon’s craters...finding charging points to return home might be a tiny problem though!! Not forgetting our precious animals and pets, a space vet clinic was launched to rescue any stray dogs, cats and hamsters who decided that the moon was not quite for them, with a cool planet-hopping space flyer to search for the more fearless puppies and kittens who ventured out on exhilarating walkabouts. What an out-of-this world creative play we all had!

This week has been full to bursting point with activities, and we hardly had time to fit them all in!  We started the week with the children telling us all about their firework experiences, we talked about the sounds they made, and the pretty patterns they created in the sky.  This soon developed into our phonics fun as we shared our story of the week, The Magical Moon Map and talked about the sound m, for moon, map and mouse.  This was a lovely story, and something of a surprise, since none of us had read it before!  The week has ended with poppies, and on Thursday we joined the school to take part in a very special assembly, standing quietly as Isabella and Theo played the Last Post and Reveille beautifully.  We then had lots of fun creating our own poppies, as well as making some beautiful poppy field pictures to remind us of those we love.  Threading it’s way through the week was a ‘marvellous maths’ theme for Maths England Week.  The children knocked my socks off as they joined in with the story of Spinderella – counting their friends in different ways to create two groups of equal sizes, just to be fair.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, enjoy spending time together.

We are excited to join The Big PTA Christmas Raffle. This raffle was so successful last year, the tickets sold out!

Crackley’s Christmas Light Trail is set to return on Friday 3 December this year but we need more volunteers in order to make this event possible! It was such a wonderful sight last year, we would absolutely love to make it happen again!

We still need a few more households to volunteer their Christmas Light Displays at their houses to be included on the map. The display can be as simple or as flamboyant as you like so don't be shy!
