Headmaster's Message

Headmaster's Welcome

Dear Parents

As expected, this week has unfortunately been dominated by news regarding COVID-19 and the procedures that have been put in place by our Government, followed by meetings and preparations.

I appreciate that you will have received and will continue to receive numerous emails from school with details about home learning.  This is, at the moment, the method of communicating with parents but we will also be contacting families by phone throughout the period off site to ensure that all is well at home and that the children are managing both academically and pastorally.  These are unprecedented times and your patience and support throughout is much appreciated.

Whilst schools have been instructed to close from today, we will as requested by the Government, remain open to children of key workers.  The Government has stated that the intention is to prevent transmission and therefore states, if at all possible, that children can should stay safely at home.  As mentioned, this is to limit the chance of the virus spreading.  Obviously our normal staffing levels have been affected and whilst the school is open, we will only be able to offer provision based on the resources we have available to us. Pupils will be supervised whilst at school, though not necessarily by teaching staff, who will very often be involved in maintaining the Home Learning programme.  Pupils of key workers, who are unable to make alternative arrangements, will be given IT access to enable them to follow the same Home Learning programme as their peers.

On a brighter note, Junior 3 and Junior 4 children were able to perform the Easter Production to the rest of school on Tuesday.  Thank you to Mrs Wildey, Mrs Paphitis and Mrs Olden for their contribution and to Mrs Hill for taking the photographs.  It is hoped that a video will be available shortly for parents to view.

We celebrated St Joseph’s Day yesterday and all children enjoyed a picnic lunch and an afternoon cake provided by Mr Sansum and his team.  It was not the day we had planned but St Joseph, our Patron Saint, was remembered.  Prayers were offered and this seemed to have a particularly calming effect at this difficult time.

Although we were unable to hold the usual celebration assembly today, I visited each classroom this morning to deliver Stars of the Week, silver and bronze awards and celebrate birthdays.  We even managed to have some pupils from some classes perform an impromptu song.  I am pleased to report that all children enjoyed this new approach but I sincerely hope that we will not have to continue this procedure for an extended length of time and that you will be able to return and celebrate with your children.

Stars of the week were awarded to: Harriet, Isabel, Edward, Lexi-Jean, J2H, Tommy, Julia, Elena, Joseph, Merry, Lili, Helayna, Millie, Ajunee and Tom.  Congratlations to all of them and to our Merit Certificate recipients.  A special mention goes to Esme who received her Gold Certificate.  Well done to all of our pupils!

Staff have worked incredibly hard preparing for the home learning and will continue to provide support for your children whilst they are not physically at school.  There are some very useful resources that they will continue to research and provide children with.  We look forward to keeping up to date with you and hearing from the children too.  We are acutely aware that the pastoral aspect of this extended period of absence may be upsetting and unsettling for families.  We will do our utmost to keep in contact and support you through this time.

We will be reviewing many aspects of our provision in light of the current situation.  Please feel free to share any good ideas or suggestions with us as we are all on a learning curve together.  Thank you for all your words of support and appreciation.  There have been so many.

Have a lovely weekend with your families.

God bless

Mr Duigan

St Joseph's Remembered

On Thursday we should have celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of our school, and begun the celebrations of its long history, the foundations of which were laid 75 years ago.

Although we were unable to gather together for our Mass, nor our Open House and Anniversary Ball which were planned for this coming Saturday, it is still fitting that we all take a moment, to remember all those who, through hard work, devotion and commitment, have made our school the success it is today.

We should all reflect on how we can be like Saint Joseph, steadfast, caring and faithful and how we can listen and understand the Word of God.

We plan to reschedule the celebrations to later in the year and hope that you will be able to join us then to celebrate the school’s success and achievements over the years and how the school continues to build upon the legacy begun by the Sisters of Mercy and St Joseph’s Convent School.

Easter Story Retold By Junior 3 And Junior 4

On Tuesday 17 March, Junior 3 and Junior 4 performed a simple but dramatic musical that portrayed the intrigue and mixed emotions of the Easter story.

In front of their friends, they told of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, Judas’ betrayal, the Last Supper, his arrest, crucifixion and of how he rose again.

The children carried the narrative of the story with great passion and it was lovely to hear the energetic singing of the chorus. It was a brilliant, moving performance; Junior 3 and Junior 4 portrayed the important story so well.

Well done to all the children and a huge thank you to all the staff involved in putting the performance together.

The Origins Of Crackley Hall School's Logo

Crackley Hall has been reflecting on the long history of the school as we celebrate 75 years since the school started life as St Joseph’s Convent School.

Just this week the Foundation’s archivist, Janette Ratcliffe, has been investigating the origins of the school logo. It is based on the Mercy Shield that is used throughout the world by the Sisters of Mercy in schools, colleges and hospitals founded by them.

The crown at the top reflects the patronage of Mary. The seven bars reflect the seven works of mercy. The Celtic Cross is a reference to the Irish roots of the Sisters whilst the anchor reflects their faith. At the bottom the Latin word Misericordia meaning Mercy is replaced on Crackley’s version of the logo with the term Collaboremus meaning to collaborate.

For more information you can download a copy of Janette’s guide to the logo here.

All very fascinating for us all.

@Parenting@Princethorpe Twitter Feed

The Foundation’s senior school Princethorpe College has set up a Twitter account to provide helpful advice and guidance to parents of pupils at the school.  Much of the advice is not specific to secondary aged children so we are inviting all members of our wider school community to follow the account.

Run by Princethorpe College’s Deputy Head Pastoral, Mrs Beth Sharpe, it is sharing information and links from a variety of official sources and includes useful learning resources as well as advice to keep us all mentally well and safe.

Glow For Myton - Postponed Until October

Myton Hospice have taken the decision to postpone their upcoming Glow For Myton event.

The fundraising walk was due to take place on Saturday 28 March but due to the uncertainty of the current Coronavirus outbreak the Hospice has decided that it is in the best interest of all their supporters, volunteers, suppliers and staff to postpone the event until later this year.

Myton Hospice needs to raise £9.2 million to continue providing their services free of charge to terminally ill patients and their families. Glow for Myton is their largest fundraising event and was set to raise at least £60,000 so Princethorpe College has offered a new date for the event in the autumn and is now looking forward to hosting the Glow fundraiser on Saturday 17 October.

Rebecca Richards from Myton Hospice comments, “We understand that fundraisers will be disappointed, as are we, and we are really sorry for any inconvenience caused. We hope that they appreciate that this decision has not been an easy one for us, but we do believe it is the right one in light of the current and rapidly-changing situation.”

Myton Hospice will be discussing with fundraisers whether they wish for their registration to be carried forward, converted to a donation or request a refund.

RE Book Of The Week

Ms Holmes had the pleasure of working with Junior 5 covering an RE lesson on Palm Sunday, this week. Harry produced a superb account and felt confident enough to read his work out to the other children. He brought the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem to life and we all enjoyed listening to his account.

Lego Club News

Amy in J2M has been very busy building a dream bedroom for her Lego friends.

She has devised mermaids who change into humans when they are above the water and their pets include lizards who like to hide under the tables!  There is plenty of activity going on with sleepovers and midnight feasts all filled with fun and laughter.

We love Amy’s Lego World!

Little Crackers

Nursery News

Hello everyone.  Although this week may have been unsettling for the adults, the children in nursery have continued to make the most of their opportunities to play, and we have had a lovely time.

The brief return of the sun enabled us to get out and about at the start of the week and even when it rained, we still popped our hoods up and got out in the fresh air.

As we move into this new and potentially exciting phase; joining our children as they extend their learning at home, please send us photos and messages.  Not only do we want to see all the fun you have, but we intend to share these pictures in our weekly newsletter as we work together to maintain our Little Crackers community.

I hope you all have a calm and peaceful time with your families, and wish you all good health, lots of smiles, and not too much playdough in the carpet during the coming weeks!
