Little Crackers

In Nursery This Week

This week, Dormice children have visited Castles again before we move on next week to find out about, ‘The Farm’. They have explored different materials to make castles and compare sizes, as well as decorating crowns to make them as sparkly and bejewelled as possible!

In Badgers and Hedgehogs we have been focusing upon the topic of shops and shopping.

Mrs Whitehurst revived a moment of TV gold, which brought out the competitive instinct in everyone. Children set off, wearing the most determined expressions, as they raced to collect as many food tins as possible during our trolley-dash game of ’Supermarket Sweep’. This was a Maths lesson which not only included lots of counting and comparing quantities, but also introduced the concept of estimation because pupils had to predict how many tins they could transport in 30 seconds.

Inside, we also set up a fabulous Farm shop in the role play area, with real fruit and vegetables as well as basic groceries. The children enjoyed taking turns to be either seller or customer and were able to purchase goods using either a cash till or a card reader.

Outside, Mrs Allen supported the children as they practised giving directions to each other, so that partners could find their way to the different shops which were arranged all around the learning area. The children did a brilliant job at negotiating the space, using phrases such as “go forward three steps” and “stop at the bench”.

Gardening report: we checked underneath the cloches in our vegetable beds and are pleased to report that the delicate seedlings which the children planted last week, seem to have survived the slugs and snails so far! The glorious sunshine at the start of the week should give them a hearty boost. We hope to plant some baby lettuce next week so have dug the remaining bed and added compost in anticipation of good weather.

During RE, Badgers and Hedgehogs have been learning about the power of the Holy Spirit, which fills our hearts with love and helps us to be kind and to make the right choices as we play. We can’t see God the Holy Spirit, but just like the invisible power of the wind, we can see its effect in the way that people behave. The colour for this liturgical season of Pentecost is red, so the children used fans and the invisible power of the wind, to propel some red tissue paper fish along the floor.

In the sensory tray this week, the children have been up to their elbows in gooey porridge – just for messy fun! Finally, our Little Crackers had an opportunity to strut their stuff during World Dance Day. So all in all, another busy week in Nursery.
